ATHENS, Ohio – Gardner-Webb picked up individual wins from
Tyler Marinelli,
Brett Stein and
Anthony Perrine, but fell to host Ohio University by a 28-10 score on Super Bowl Sunday.
The Bobcats won the first four bouts of the day, picking up a forfeit at 125 and bonus point wins at both 133 and 141 to go up 15-0. A decision at 149 pushed that margin to 18-0, before Gardner-Webb got things rolling.
Tyler Marinelli captured a solid 6-4 win over the Bobcats' Cullen Cummings at 157 pounds for his team's first victory of the day, and senior
Brett Stein followed with a major decision – rolling to a 16-6 score past Joe Terry at 165 pounds.
Ohio got back on track at 174 and 184 pounds, taking a close 2-0 decision at 174 and a 6-0 decision at 184, but freshman
Anthony Perrine made the most of a return to his home state with a 9-8 decision over Aaron Naples at 197.
The Bobcats picked up a 12-4 decision at 285 to wrap up the day.
Gardner-Webb gets back into SoCon action next week, traveling to Chattanooga on Sunday. GWU will then return home for its two final matches of the regular season, hosting The Citadel on February 13 and Davidson on February 16 (Senior Night). Both home matches will begin at 7 pm in Paul Porter Arena.
