BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. –
Andria Booth went 6-for-8 and batted in four runs, as the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs earned the series sweep of the Presbyterian College Blue Hose with two victories, 13-7 and 11-3, on Saturday.
Game One: Gardner-Webb 13, Presbyterian 7
The Runnin' Bulldogs (19-12, 3-2 Big South Conference) took a 2-0 lead in the first thanks to a leadoff single by Booth and
Weslyn Almond taking first base after being hit by a pitch – the fourth one she saw during the at bat.
Both players eventually crossed home on RBI groundouts, which gave GWU the lead.
Sam Harrell worked her way out of a jam in the top of the second, and the Runnin' Bulldogs used a pair of infield singles to add a run in the bottom of the frame and take a 3-0 lead.
Presbyterian scored its first run in the top of the third, but Gardner-Webb answered by taking a five-run lead thanks to two runs in its half of the frame.
Rachel Cumiskey and
Jenna Wacaster both batted in runners, giving the 'Dogs a four-run lead after three complete innings.
The Blue Hose scored twice in the bottom of the third to make it a two-run game, but after going down in order in the fourth, the Runnin' Bulldogs used a four-run fifth inning to extend their lead to 9-3.
Annamarie Warley's base hit loaded the bases in the inning, and Booth and
Maddi Johnson both singled, batting in runners. Booth's single allowed
Katie Stettler to score, while Johnson's hit scored Booth and
Trinity Sterrett, with Warley coming home a wild pitch.
With the score at 9-3 after five innings, both teams would plate four runs in the sixth.
Presbyterian (2-22, 0-2 BSC) once again made it just a two-run ball game, using five hits – four singles and a double – but Gardner-Webb extended its lead back to six runs in the bottom of the frame.
J. Wacaster and Warley both recorded RBI singles, while Booth hit a two-RBI base knock, allowing the 12
th and 13 runs to cross the plate for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
Laken Myers, who came on in relief of Harrell for the seventh inning, retired the Blue Hose in order as Gardner-Webb earned the series victory, 13-7.
Harrell (3-1) pitched six innings and gave up seven runs (five earned). She walked one and struck out a pair. PC's Alex Cook (0-6) gave up 12 runs (eight earned) in 5.1 innings of work and took the loss.
Booth (4-for-5, 4 RBI), Stettler (3-for-4, 3 runs),
Katie Prebble (2-for-5, run), Cumiskey (2-for-4, 2 RBI), Warley (2-for-4, 2 runs, RBI) and Sterrett (2-for-3, run) all had a multi-hit game for the 'Dogs.
Game Two: Gardner-Webb 11, Presbyterian 3 (5 innings)
Three straight batters reached base for Gardner-Webb in the opening inning as Booth started things off with a single, her fifth hit of the day. Almond and
Kaylee Wacaster both recorded RBI triples, giving the Runnin' Bulldogs a 2-0 lead after one inning.
In the second, after Almond and Prebble were hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, Wacaster hit a grand slam, to make the score 8-0 in favor of the home team.
Presbyterian (2-23, 0-3 BSC) would cut into the Runnin' Bulldogs' (20-12, 4-2 BSC) lead in the top of the third, scoring three runs on four hits – three singles and a double. The Blue Hose also took advantage of an error by the Gardner-Webb defense.
The Runnin' Bulldogs were retired in order in their half of the third, but scored the final three runs of the game in the bottom of the fourth.
Prebble recorded an infield single and stole second, before Cumiskey earned a one-out walk. Johnson drew the second straight walk for Gardner-Webb, and J. Wacaster proceeded to single through the left side of the infield, scoring Cumiskey and Prebble respectively.

With an 11-3 lead,
Ashley Wark forced Presbyterian to leave two runners on base in the top of the fifth, as the game was called due to the eight-run after five innings rule.
Wark (12-7) allowed just one earned run over five innings of work. PC's Kaylee Allen (0-2) spent only one inning in the circle and received the loss.
Booth and Prebble each had two hits, while five Runnin' Bulldogs recorded a single hit in the contest.
Gardner-Webb will return to action on Wednesday, March 21, for a doubleheader at Furman. The non-conference contests are the start of an eight-game road trip for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
