CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Four new personal records were set at members of the Gardner-Webb men's and women's track and field teams opened the 2018 outdoor season at the 49er Classic at the Irwin Belk Track and Field Center on the campus of UNC Charlotte.
Jordan Smith placed fourth in the men's hammer toss with a personal best mark of 52.29 meters, the seventh-best mark in GWU history. He also placed seventh in the shot put at 16.03 meters and tenth in the discus at 44.44 meters.
In the women's shot put,
Sarah Mitchell set a new personal record with a mark of 14.15 meters to place fourth overall. That was also the second furthest shot put result in GWU history. She also finished the discus and hammer toss with marks of 39.60 meters and 43.93 meters respectively.
Ross Lucia set a new personal record in the men's shot put with a distance of 12.89 meters.
Petra Jakeljic earned a fifth-place finish in the women's hammer toss with a distance of 55.29 meters.
Carlos Williams clocked in with a new personal best time of 10.98 seconds in the men's 100-meter dash, ranking eighth in GWU history for the event. Chris Tobin timed in at 12.02 seconds in his first time competing in the event.
In the women's 5,000-meter run,
Gabby Cortese crossed the line with a time of 18:48.26.
Mitchell Brown timed in at 4:15.96 in the men's 1,500-meter run in his first time competing in the event.
Ezekiel Martin finished the event with a time of 4:34.63.
In the men's 400-meter dash,
Caleb Silvey clocked in at 51.99 seconds.
Austin Evans finished the men's 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.16 seconds in his first time competing in the event.
