March 23, 2018 | Women's Tennis
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Coach Jim Corn's Gardner-Webb women's tennis squad recorded three singles victories, but fell to the Radford Highlanders, 4-3, on Friday.
"You can't get any closer than that," said Corn. "The girls played extremely hard, and the effort was incredible. We'll keep fighting and getting better."
After Radford opened play with a victory at No. 1 doubles, Paula Romero and Daniela Naupari won at No. 3, which put the doubles point on the line at No. 2 flight. Sarah Rieckmann and reigning Big South Conference Freshman of the Week Valentine Limauge put up a fight, but fell in a tiebreaker, 7-5.
Limauge's singles match in the No. 5 position was the first contest to conclude, and the Brussels, Belgium native came out on top, 6-2, 6-1, tying the match at one point each.
The visiting Highlanders took a 3-1 lead with wins in the No. 2 and No. 1 singles positions, but Naupari pulled Gardner-Webb within a point, winning 6-0, 6-4, in the No. 4 position.
Radford clinched the match with a win in the No. 3 flight, but Romero won at No. 6, 6-0, 6-3, to make it a 4-3 final score.
The loss drops the Runnin' Bulldogs to 2-10 overall and 0-5 in Big South Conference play. Radford improves to 8-6 and 2-1 in the BSC.
Gardner-Webb will return to action on Wednesday, March 21, when the Western Carolina Catamounts visit Boiling Springs. Match time is set for 2 p.m.
