KENNESAW, Ga. – The Runnin' Bulldogs men's tennis squad dropped a 4-0 match to the Kennesaw State Owls on a cold Sunday afternoon in Kennesaw, Georgia.
"I was pleased with effort," said coach
Mike Griffith. "We played to clinch, and a slow start in doubles hurt us. We had good singles play. Despite losing the clinching match in three sets, we were up in the remaining three contests and learned a lot from playing Kennesaw State today."
Due to prior agreement by both coaches, the match was called when the contest was clinched, leaving a number of matches unfinished.
KSU won the doubles point, but
Maximilian Scholl and
Millen Hurrion's battle in the No. 1 flight was not completed.
In singles play, the Runnin' Bulldogs fell in straight sets in the No. 1 and No. 3 positions.
Stefano Puga fought to a three-set defeat at No. 4. Puga won the second set, 6-1.
Three singles matches went unfinished due to the Owls having clinched the match point. Hurrion (No. 2),
Adam Schmidt (No. 5) and
Breno Plentz (No. 6) were all in the second set of their respective contests when the match was called.
Schmidt won his opening set at No. 5, 6-3, while Hurrion lost the first set, 6-2. Plentz was defeated in set one by a 6-4 score.
Gardner-Webb is now 6-13 overall, and Kennesaw State improved to 6-7.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will play their third straight road match on Tuesday, March 27, when they travel to Orangeburg, South Carolina to battle the South Carolina State Bulldogs. Match time is set for 1:30 p.m.
