GREENVILLE, S.C. – Gardner-Webb finished in a tie for eighth Sunday in the final round of the 2018 Furman Intercollegiate men's golf tournament.
Lightning halted play prior to the conclusion of the second round Saturday, with the groups still on the course forced to finish their second rounds on Sunday morning.
The Runnin' Bulldogs shot their best round of the tournament over the second 18 holes of the event, carding a 287. Four of Gardner-Webb's five golfers shot par or better, with
Aaron Thomas coming alive with a 1-under par 71 in the second round – an improvement of four strokes from Friday's opening 18 holes.
Thomas sank six birdies during his second round, starting his day on the 10th hole. After shooting even par through his first nine, Thomas used birdies on the second, fourth and sixth holes to get under par for the day.
He came back Sunday with a solid effort, sinking three birdie puts to finish at even par over the final 18 holes. That placed the GWU veteran in a tie for 20th for the 54-hole tournament (75-71-72-218).
Chad Phillips, who started with a 2-under round on Friday, finished one stroke behind Thomas in a tie for 22nd individually. Phillips shot even par in the second round and fired a 77 on Sunday (70-72-77-219).
