ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Despite a 4-3 loss to South Carolina State, men's tennis coach Mike Griffith was pleased with the effort of his Runnin' Bulldogs squad.
"Today was much better than against Kennesaw State," said Griffith. "We had better focus, energy and enthusiasm. Our guys are excited to play a Wofford team that has been dominant recently. It's our last non-conference match of the year, and the team is looking forward to some great tennis."
To begin the match in Orangeburg, the Bulldogs of South Carolina State clinched the doubles point with a pair of 6-3 victories in the No. 2 and 3 flights respectively.
Maximilian Scholl kicked off singles competition with a win for Gardner-Webb. Scholl, playing in the No. 1 flight, won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4. The win was his 10th of the season.
South Carolina State clinched the match with three straight victories at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 2 singles, before Adam Schmidt and Breno Plentz earned victories for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
In the No. 5 position, Schmidt won in a super tiebreaker. He won the first set 6-2 but dropped set two by a 6-4 score. The super tiebreaker easily went in his favor, 10-3.
Plentz's match ended in similar fashion as Schmidt's. After one set, he found himself with the lead, but after dropping the second, he had to play a super tiebeaker. Plentz narrowly escaped, winning 10-8, for his 7th victory of the year.
Gardner-Webb will return to action tomorrow against the Wofford Terriers. Match time is set for 3 p.m. from Boiling Springs.
