BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – On a day where the team honored its four seniors, the Gardner-Webb men's tennis squad earned a 5-2 victory over Big South Conference foe Radford.
Prior to the match with the Highlanders, head coach
Mike Griffith recognized seniors
Anthony Brennan,
Paul Hogan,
Michael Perry and
Adam Schmidt.
"We had a business-like approach today," said Griffith. "It was great to honor the seniors who have meant so much to our program. This win was a big step for our guys and great momentum as we prepare for UNC Asheville. Like I told the team, not everybody won today individually, but the bottom line is that the team won, which is important. Our guys are dedicated and are looking forward to competing against (UNC) Asheville."
In doubles action,
Maximilian Scholl and
Millen Hurrion cruised to a 6-2 victory at No. 1, before
Ross Gilbert and Schmidt clinched the point with a 6-2 victory of their own in the No. 3 position.
The Runnin' Bulldogs won two of the first three singles matches to finish, taking a 3-1 lead over the Highlanders. Schmidt and
Breno Plentz both won in straight sets at No. 5 and No. 6 respectively.
Radford won its second match of the day in the No. 3 flight, but Scholl clinched the match for Gardner-Webb with a 6-4, 6-3 victory in the No. 1 position.
Hurrion ended by winning at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-2, as the Runnin' Bulldogs earned their first BSC victory of the season.
The 'Dogs are now 8-14 overall (1-5 BSC), while Radford drops to 8-8 (0-5 BSC).
Gardner-Webb will return to action on Thursday, April 5
th when it visits UNC Asheville. First serve is set for 3 p.m.
