March 07, 2018 | Men's Tennis
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – For the second consecutive week and fourth time in 2018, Gardner-Webb's Millen Hurrion has been named the Big South Conference men's tennis Freshman of the Week.
The Weymouth, England native had a stellar week for the 'Dogs going a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles action, as Gardner-Webb ended the week with a 1-1 record. The Runnin' Bulldogs earned a victory over Appalachian State before falling to Winthrop.
I'm thrilled for Millen," said head coach Mike Griffith. "He's shown great improvement from the fall and really turned the corner in mid-February. He was great in the fall too, often beating No.1 and No. 2 seeds, but he has more trust in his shots and game as a whole."
Hurrion won two doubles matches in the No. 1 position, both with partner Maximilian Scholl. The duo won 6-2 over App State and 6-1 over Winthrop. His play helped Gardner-Webb clinch the doubles point in both matches.
In singles play, Hurrion finished the week 2-0 in the No. 2 flight. He won in straight sets against Appalachian State's Ben Webster, 6-2, 6-3 and battled for a three-set win over Winthrop's Connor Williamson, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2.
"This is a great honor," stated Hurrion. "I'm very happy the hard work is starting to pay off and could not have earned this recognition without the help of my teammates."
Thus far, Hurrion is a perfect 4-0 in doubles competition when teamed with Scholl, with each of their matches being in the No. 1 flight. He has a 7-8 record in singles play and is on a three-game win streak heading into the Runnin' Bulldogs' match against Liberty.
The 'Dogs will travel to Liberty on Friday, March 9, for a Big South Conference match, at 2 p.m. The following day, Gardner-Webb will continue its road trip, with an 11 a.m. contest against fellow BSC opponent Longwood.
