ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Gardner-Webb swim program continued competition at the CSCAA National Invitational on Friday, with
Seggio Bernardina earning a podium finish.
"We had a great night in the pool," said head coach
Mike Simpson. "Both of the men's 200-yard medley relay teams got everyone psyched up with fantastic splits. The A relay team actually swam faster than they did at the conference meet, and the B relay team was outstanding. Our sprinters, led by Seggio's podium finish, had a great night. All of our swimmers competed well, and we are looking forward to a strong finish tomorrow."
Gardner-Webb began the morning with several strong swims in the prelims. Bernardina finished third in the 100-yard butterfly (48.43 seconds), while
Cullen Fields also finished inside the top-10, in eighth (48.89). Both swimmers, in addition to
Tyler Gomez (15
th place, 49.36), qualified for the finals.
Eli Coan placed 22
nd (49.98) and
Zach Dingfield (50.59) finished 29
th.
Fields also swam in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing 15
th and ensuring a spot in the evening session. Fields swam the event in 50.68.
Jordan Mintz qualified for the 100-yard breaststroke final with a 12
th-place finish and time of 55.66 seconds.
Austin Toney also raced, finishing the event in 59.37 seconds.
For the women,
Tessa Walsh came home 20
th in the 100-yard butterfly.
Lara Siebrecht finished ninth in the 100-yard breaststroke, qualifying for the finals thanks to her time of 55.66 seconds.
In the finals, the men's 200-yard medley team of
Garrett Simpson, Mintz, Bernardina and Coan finished fifth with a time of 1:29.95. The B final squad of Fields, Toney, Gomez and Dingfield swam the event in 1:32.01.
Bernardina earned a podium finish in the A final of the 100-yard butterfly, swimming in 48.24 seconds. Fields (49.77) finished seventh, while Gomez (48.66) led the B final and finished ninth overall.
In the 100-yard breaststroke, Mintz finished 10
th overall, racing in the B final.
In the 100-yard backstroke Siebrecht swam in 55.92 seconds on the women's side, while Fields swam the event in 51.02 seconds for the men.
After day two, the men are still in 10
th place (138.5 points). George Washington leads the event.
Day three begins tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. with prelims. The finals will start at 6 p.m.
