Hurrion Earns Fifth Freshman of the Week Honor
April 11, 2018 | Men's Tennis
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – After going undefeated last week and knocking off a ranked doubles team, Gardner-Webb's Millen Hurrion was named the Big South Conference men's tennis Freshman of the Week.
This is the fifth time Hurrion has received the honor. He previously received recognition on January 17, January 31, February 28 and March 7.
"I'm excited to se Millen get another Freshman of the Week honor," said head coach Mike Griffith. "He is playing great tennis and has gotten hot at the right time. This season we've played the most difficult schedule we have ever done with a lot of road and indoor matches to prepare us for the conference tournament. It's important to have a winning streak and momentum heading into the tournament."
Hurrion had a stellar performance in Gardner-Webb's lone match last week at UNC Asheville, a 4-3 win for the Runnin' Bulldogs. The freshman teamed up with Maximilian Scholl at No. 1 doubles and defeated the nation's then 38th-ranked doubles team of Olly Cull and Henry Patten. Hurrion and Scholl cruised to a 6-1 victory.
Yesterday, the International Tennis Association announced its latest rankings, in which the duo was ranked 67th out of 90 doubles teams. Together, they are 8-2 for the spring and are riding a three-game winning streak.
In singles play, Hurrion clinched the match victory against UNCA with a three-set win in the No. 2 position, 7-6, 4-6, 6-3. For the year, he is tied with Scholl for a team-high 12 wins in singles play and has won his last three singles matches.
Hurrion and his Runnin' Bulldog teammates are back in action next week at the Big South Conference Tennis Championships. The three-day event will take place at the Rock Hill Tennis Center in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Seedings for the tournament will be announced on Friday, April 13.
