April 13, 2018 | Men's Tennis
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Big South Conference announced today that the Gardner-Webb men's tennis team will be seeded sixth and face off against No. 3 Presbyterian in opening round of the next week's conference tournament.
The Runnin' Bulldogs earned the six-seed over UNC Asheville thanks to its 4-3 win over the Bulldogs on April 5.
The tournament will begin on Monday, April 16 and conclude with the championship match at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 18. The match between the 'Dogs and Blue Hose is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Monday from the Rock Hill Tennis Center in Rock Hill, S.C.
"We're excited to have the opportunity to compete and play at least one more match," said head coach Mike Griffith. "Our team has gotten hot at the right time and is playing the best tennis of the year. We're playing a team that beat us earlier in the season but our guys are ready for the challenge and are excited to start tournament play."
In the lone match between the Runnin' Bulldogs and Blue Hose, on March 23, Presbyterian escaped with a 4-3 victory.
The Blue Hose took the doubles point, but Maximilian Scholl (No. 1 singles), Adam Schmidt (No. 4) and Stefano Puga (No. 6) were victorious in their respective singles matches for GWU.
Scholl (6-4, 6-4) and Puga (7-6, 7-5) each won in straight sets, while Schmidt battled for a four-set win.
