Hurrion, Scholl Earn Multiple Awards From Big South Conference
April 16, 2018 | Men's Tennis
Hurrion was named the Freshman of the Year and First Team All-Conference Singles, while Scholl was the third leading vote getter on the First-Team All Conference Singles squad. The duo was also named to the First Team All-Conference Doubles team. Additionally, Scholl found his way on to the All-Academic team and was second in Scholar Athlete of the Year voting.
"I'm happy to see Max and Millen's hard work pay off," said head coach Mike Griffith. "We play the best schedule possible to set our players up for success, and if we do that then our team benefits. Our goal is to win today (at the conference tournament), and I know these two, along with the entire team, will do whatever is necessary to get the job done."
In singles play, Hurrion, who hails from Weymouth, England, concluded the regular season with a 12-10 record. 20 of his 22 matches came in the No. 2 flight, where he recorded an 11-9 record. He played a pair of matches in the No. 1 position and recorded one victory.
In non-conference play, Hurrion, a five-time Big South Conference Freshman of the Week honoree, defeated the nation's 117th-ranked singles player, Virginia Tech's Jason Kros, 6-4, 6-3.
In conference action, he went 5-2 against BSC players. Both of his defeats came against upperclassmen. He ended the regular season on a three-match winning streak and was 8-2 over his final 10 matches.
Scholl, a junior from Stuttgart, Germany, also recorded 12 wins. He finished 12-8 overall (.600) with all his matches coming in the No.1 flight.
"Getting First Team All-Conference honors in both singles and doubles is something I aimed for at the beginning of the season," said Scholl. "Millen played a fantastic year and is the best freshman in the Big South, so he really deserves that accolade. It is great to get rewarded for all the work we put in throughout the last months. Those individual awards are great, but it is the ultimate goal to win as a team at the conference tournament, and all of us are really looking forward to it."
In conference play, Scholl went 4-3, while going 8-5 in action outside of the Big South Conference. He was ranked as high as No. 98 in the country during the season.
In doubles action, the duo teamed up for 10 matches and won eight of those, finishing the year on a three-match winning streak. In last week's International Tennis Association Doubles poll, Scholl and Hurrion were ranked as the 67th doubles team.
The duo earned that ranking in part to defeat of the then 37th-ranked doubles team of Henry Patten and Olly Cull from conference foe UNC Asheville. In the match at No. 1 doubles, Scholl and Hurrion got the better of Patten and Cull, 6-1.
Off the court, Scholl, who has a 3.83 GPA and is an International Business major, was named to the All-Academic team and finished second in the Scholar Athlete of the Year voting.
