ROCK HILL, S.C. – Gardner-Webb women's tennis fell in the quarterfinals of the Big South Conference tournament today with a 4-3 defeat to Longwood.
The 'Dogs clinched the doubles point with wins in the No. 3 and No. 1 positions and had momentum in singles play but were unable to sustain it.
In the No. 3 doubles flight,
Daniela Naupari and
Paula Romero were victorious 6-2. Their teammates in the No. 1 position,
Sandra Bolstad and
Miljana Ristic, won 6-3.
The Runnin' Bulldogs quickly won the first two singles matches to take a 3-0 lead.
Naupari allowed her opponent to win only two games in two sets, earning a 6-1, 6-1, victory in the No. 4 flight.
In the No. 6 position, Romero won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.
Longwood battled back to make it a 3-3 contest with wins in the No. 5, No. 1 and No. 2 positions.
Bolstad (No. 1) and
Sarah Rieckmann (No. 2) both fought for three sets before their opponents prevailed. Both players won the second set of their respective match.
Miljana Ristic's match was the final one to conclude, with the Lancers' Marija Ventic taking the victory. Ristic won the first set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (8-6) while Ventic was victorious in the second and third sets to clinch the match for Longwood.
Gardner-Webb's season comes to an end with a 4-14 overall record. The Lancers are now 9-10 overall and will face top-seeded Winthrop tomorrow at 9 a.m.
