
Men's Golf Shines Friday, Sits In First At 2018 Big South Golf Championship

NINETY SIX, S.C. – Gardner-Webb heated up in the first round of the 2018 Big South Conference Men's Golf Championship Friday, leading for much of the day to finish in first place after 18 holes.
Head coach Tee Burton's Runnin' Bulldogs carded a 291 on the day, good for a two stroke team lead over Campbell and Charleston Southern heading into Saturday's second round at the 7,120-yard (Par 72) Patriot Golf Club at Grand Harbor.
Veteran Aaron Thomas led the way, shooting even par on each of the first 17 holes before sinking a birdie putt on No. 18 to finish 1-under par (71) for the day. He finished by himself in third position, one stroke out of second and four strokes off the lead.
Steffen Smith and Charles Dallery each shot even par to finish in a tie for fourth, with Smith pacing Gardner-Webb's group for a large portion of the first round.
Dallery overcame a double bogey at No. 3 with three birdies between holes 8-15. He finished with a 1-under 35 on the back nine to pull even with Smith by the end of the day.
Senior Jake Kennedy and Purdue transfer Chad Phillips were both solid Friday as well, with Kennedy finishing the day tied for 26th with a round of 76.
Gardner-Webb's student body president bounced back from a tough start on the front nine, shooting par on each of his final 10 holes to keep the lead pack within striking distance.
Phillips carded a 78 to finish two strokes behind Kennedy in a tie for 33rd.
Gardner-Webb's group paced the field on Par 3 holes, shooting an average of 2.89 on the day – the only team to finish below par on those holes. GWU also led the field with 68 pars.
Kennedy (-1) and Dallery (-1) each finished under par on Par 3 holes Friday individually. The average score for the entire field Friday was 75.69.
Charleston Southern's Jacques Wilson led the way Friday with a sizzling round of 67, while Campbell's Jesper Svensson was three strokes back with a second-place 70.
