Thomas Named All-Conference, Men's Golf Takes Fifth At Big South Championship

NINETY SIX, S.C. – Gardner-Webb shot a combined 298 Sunday on the final day of the 2018 Big South Conference Men's Golf Championship, finishing fifth at the event.
The Runnin' Bulldogs were seven shots off of their pace over the first two rounds, finishing four strokes out of third place.
Top-seeded Liberty continued their Saturday rally, winning the tournament by 19 strokes over second-place Campbell. High Point (876), Charleston Southern (877) and Gardner-Webb (880) rounded out to the top-five.
Gardner-Webb senior Aaron Thomas was named to the All-Big South Conference team following Sunday's play, and paced the Runnin' Bulldogs once again by finishing sixth individually. Thomas shot an even par 72 on Sunday, recording a pair of birdies on the front nine and another after the turn.
Sophomore Steffen Smith posted another solid round, firing a 74 to finish in a tie for 12th. The former Greater Atlanta Christian standout overcame three bogeys on his first seven holes, rallying with a birdie on No. 8 – and sinking birdies on No. 16 and No. 18 to improve his place on the leaderboard.
Smith, who carries a 3.83 cumulative GPA in business administration, was also named to the Big South Conference Men's Golf All-Academic Team.
Charles Dallery matched his Saturday round to finish in a tie for 22nd individually, shooting a 224 (72-76-76) for the weekend. Chad Phillips (78-73-76-227) finished in a tie for 25th and Jake Kennedy (76-81-76-233) finished 37th.
Gardner-Webb paced the field over 54 holes with 172 pars, finished second with a pair of eagles and had the best scoring average on Par 3 holes for the tournament.
