Offensive Firepower Helps Gardner-Webb Split Doubleheader Against Appalachian State

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Laken Myers surrendered only three earned runs in six innings and Andria Booth broke the single-season hits record, as Gardner-Webb powered past Appalachian State, 9-7, in game two of the twinbill, after falling in game one, 6-1.

Game One: Appalachian State 6, Gardner-Webb 1

Four runs in the first two innings helped the Appalachian State Mountaineers defeat Gardner-Webb in game one of the doubleheader.

The Mountaineers (16-29 overall) got on the board via a two-run home run in the team's second at-bat of the game.

After the 'Dogs went down in order in the bottom of the first, a pair of throwing errors by the Gardner-Webb defense allowed the Mountaineers to plate two additional runs in the top of the second inning.

Gardner-Webb's (27-24 overall) Kaylee Wacaster and Rachel Cumiskey worked their way into scoring position in the second frame, but the Runnin' Bulldogs would remain scoreless until the bottom of the fourth.

Trailing 4-0 in the fourth, Katie Prebble started the inning with a base hit before Cumiskey was hit by a pitch. Maddi Johnson's single to left field loaded the bases with one out, and Prebble scored on an RBI single by Lauren Huffman.

After four innings, the Runnin' Bulldogs faced a three-run deficit.

Prebble reached base in the bottom of the fifth, while Huffman singled in the sixth, but Gardner-Webb was unable to cut into Appalachian State's lead.

ASU extended its lead to 6-1 via a two-run home run in the top of the seventh, and despite two walks in the bottom of the inning, Gardner-Webb was defeated.

Kenzie Longanecker (7-16) earned the win for the Mountaineers. Loganecker tossed a complete game and surrendered just one earned run, while striking out six.

Ashley Wark (16-14) threw a complete game in the Runnin' Bulldogs' loss, giving up nine runs (four earned).

Prebble and Huffman both went 2-for-3 at the plate for Gardner-Webb.

Game Two: Gardner-Webb 9, Appalachian State 7

Offensive firepower was the storyline in game two as Gardner-Webb took the final game of the doubleheader, 9-7.

The Runnin' Bulldogs (28-24 overall) jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the second.

Jenna Wacaster's two-RBI double with two outs plated Weslyn Almond and Cumiskey, putting the 'Dogs in front.

In the same inning, Booth recorded an infield single, her second of the game, giving her the Gardner-Webb single-season hits record, and J. Wacaster scored from second on a throwing error.

Katie Stettler's single through the left side of the infield scored Booth, and after two innings, Gardner-Webb led by four runs.

The Mountaineers (16-30 overall) tied the game at four runs a piece thanks to an RBI single in the third and three runs in the fifth inning.

In the fifth, Appalachian State runners scored via a groundout, throwing error and RBI double.

The game was not tied for long, however, as the Runnin' Bulldogs plated five in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead.

Prebble led off the bottom of the fifth with a single, and K. Wacaster reached base on a sacrifice bunt attempt as the Appalachian State fielder dropped the ball.

With one out, Johnson singled through the left side, scoring the duo, and Cumiskey's RBI double scored Johnson.

With her team in front, 7-4, Booth's RBI single put GWU ahead by four runs, while J. Wacaster scored on a wild pitch, giving the Runnin' Bulldogs a five-run lead.

Appalachian State pulled within three runs, 9-6, in the top of the sixth, and Gardner-Webb was held scoreless in the bottom of the inning.

After the Mountaineers threatened in the top of the seventh, getting two runners on and nobody out, Sam Harrell entered in relief, allowing just one runner to cross home plate.

Harrell earned her second save of the year and preserved the win for the Runnin' Bulldogs.

Myers (7-5) received the win, throwing six innings and giving up just three earned runs. The freshman struck out four and walked three.

Callie Kuykendall (3-7) took the loss for the Mountaineers. She threw 4.1 innings and gave up eight runs, although only two were earned.

Booth went 3-for-4 at the plate, while J. Wacaster was 2-for-3 and Huffman a perfect 2-for-2.

The Runnin' Bulldogs will return to action this weekend against Big South Conference foe Longwood. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, April 28, beginning at 1 p.m. Prior to the first pitch, head coach Tom Cole and staff will honor the team's five seniors.

The series will conclude on Sunday, April 29, with game three set for 2 p.m.
