BOONE, N.C. –One school record was broken while 16 new personal records were set as the Gardner-Webb men's and women's outdoor track and field teams had one final tune-up before the Big South Conference Championships at the Mountaineer Outdoor Meet at Kidd-Brewer Stadium on the campus of Appalachian State University.
Sarah Mitchell took home the women's shot put title with a career-best mark of 14.32 meters, which was just .09 meters short of the school record set in 2012 and ranks second all-time.
Cailen Blaire finished sixth at 11.22 meters, followed by
Amanda Hall in seventh at 10.37 meters, a new PR.
Mitchell placed second in the women's discus throw at 41.42 meters, followed by Blaire in third at 38.65 meters, a new personal-best mark that ranks seventh in school history.
Petra Jakeljic placed second in the women's hammer throw with a mark of 54.02 meters, followed by Blaire in third with a personal-best distance of 49.56 meters, ranking sixth in GWU history. Mitchell placed sixth at 47.16 meters.
In the men's shot put,
Jordan Smith placed second with a distance of 17.12 meters.
Ross Lucia earned a seventh-place finish with a mark of 13.71 meters.
Smith placed first in the men's hammer throw with a mark of 53.18 meters. Lucia placed fourth at 47.79 meters and
Kenny VanVorst placed seventh with a personal-best distance of 35.44 meters.
Smith earned a third-place finish in the men's discus throw with a toss of 45.56 meters. Lucia placed twelfth with a mark of 36.18 meters, while VanVorst finished at 34.63 meters.
Ashleigh Cleveland took home a second-place result in the women's high jump with a mark of 1.45 meters, setting a new personal record. She also placed fourth overall in the women's 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.69 seconds.
In the women's pole vault,
Karin Sastre placed fifth at 3.36 meters.
Sarah Coleman followed at 3.21 meters to finish in seventh.
The men's 4x100 meter relay team of
Mason Marshall,
Carlos Williams,
Austin Billiot, and
Chase Thornhill placed third, setting a new school record for the event with a time of 41.45 seconds, besting the time of 41.67 seconds set in 2003.
The women's 4x100 meter relay team of
Kira Ramsey,
Hannah Sparacio,
Maya Mallory, and
Diviana Forrest placed fourth with a time of 49.72 seconds.
Ezekiel Martin placed third in the men's 400-meter hurdles, crossing the finish line with a time of 58.88 seconds.
In the women's 200-meter dash,
Diviana Forrest earned a third-place finish with a time of 25.14 seconds, setting a new PR, ranking eighth in school history.
Ashleigh Cleveland clocked in at a career-best 26.87 seconds, followed by
Maya Mallory with a career-best 27.44 seconds,
Kelsey Houser with a career-best 28.75 seconds, and
Amanda Hall at 29.10 seconds.
Chase Thornhill completed the men's 200-meter dash with a time of 21.38 seconds to place fourth overall.
Mason Marshall clocked in at 22.93 seconds,
Austin Billiot at 23.34 seconds, and
Ralph Jolly at 24.07 seconds.
Hannah Jones took home a sixth place finish in the women's 400-meter dash, crossing the line at 1:02.99, setting a new personal record.
Austin Evans earned a sixth-place finish in the men's 110-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 15.97 seconds that ranks ninth all-time, followed by
Ralph Jolly who placed seventh at 16.27 seconds. Evans also placed tenth overall in the men's long jump with a mark of 5.85 meters.
Patrick Sastre finished eighth in the men's 400-meter dash at 50.33 seconds to set a new PR, followed by
Caleb Silvey who placed ninth at 50.51 seconds.
Josh Parks finished the event at 52.60 seconds.
In the women's 800-meter run,
Amy Turlington finished in sixth with a time of 2:26.58.
Jenika Hrushka followed in seventh at 2:27.28 in her first time competing at that distance.
Valerie Walker finished with a time of 2:47.27.
In the men's 100-meter dash,
Carlos Williams clocked in at 10.90 seconds to set a new personal record and place ninth overall.
Chris Tobin finished with a career-best with a time of 11.77 seconds.
Gabby Cortese placed 13th in the women's 1,500-meter run with a time of 5:11.30.
Logan McGuirt clocked in at 5:45.79.
The women's 4x400 meter relay grouping of
Kelsey Houser,
Hannah Jones,
Amy Turlington, and
Jenika Hrushka took home a third-place finish, clocking in at 4:21.40.
In the men's 4x400 meter relay, the team of
Caleb Silvey,
Patrick Sastre,
Ezekiel Martin, and
Josh Parks finished with a time of 3:30.38.
In the men's 800-meter run,
Bogdan Podgaisky timed in with a personal-best time of 2:19.26.
Sam Hermanns finished the men's 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:54.79.
Gardner-Webb will now prepare for the 2018 Big South Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, taking place Wednesday, May 9 through Friday, May 11 in High Point, N.C.
