Stettler, Cumiskey Lead Gardner-Webb Past Charleston Southern, 9-4

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Behind a four-RBI day from Katie Stettler and a grand slam from Rachel Cumiskey, Gardner-Webb defeated Charleston Southern, 9-4 in the first game of the series, while game two was halted after just 2.1 innings.

Game One: Gardner-Webb 9, Charleston Southern 4
A seven run second-inning propelled the Runnin' Bulldogs to their fifth conference victory of the year.

Weslyn Almond led things off with a walk and stole a pair of stolen bases. Annamarie Warley was then hit by a pitch and also stole a base. Andria Booth recorded a one-out walk before Stettler doubled to left field, scoring all base runners.

After Stettler's double put the 'Dogs in front, 3-0, Prebble became the second batter to be hit in the inning. Kaylee Wacaster then drew a walk, and Cumiskey made the most of her at-bat, hitting a grand slam to left field for her third home run of the year.

Cumiskey's homer put the home team in front, 7-0.

Gardner-Webb (21-17, 5-5 BSC) managed only one additional hit until the fifth inning, when it scored its eighth run of the contest.

Charleston Southern (24-18, 5-5 BSC) scored two runs in the top of the fifth, but in the bottom of the frame Almond walked and stole second before coming home on a throwing error.

The Bucs would pull within four runs in the top of the sixth, 8-4, but Stettler's solo shot in the bottom of the inning pushed Gardner-Webb's lead back to five runs.

Ashley Wark (13-10) pitched around a leadoff walk in the top of the seventh to preserve the win 9-4 for Gardner-Webb. Wark pitched 5.2 innings and gave up four earned runs. Madi Lewis and Laken Myers each saw time in relief.

At the plate, Stettler, Cumiskey and Trinity Sterrett each recorded two hits for the Runnin' Bulldogs

Game 2: Charleston Southern 7, Gardner-Webb 0 (Halted)

Charleston Southern jumped out to a 7-0 lead, scoring all of its runs in the opening inning. Due to the rain, the game was halted with one out in the top of the third inning and will be resumed at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 8. The third and final game of the series will be 30 minutes after the completion of the resumed game.
