
Five Gardner-Webb Swimmers Honored for Academic Achievements

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – At the annual Gardner-Webb University Awards Day, head coach Mike Simpson's swimming program had five individuals presented awards for their outstanding academic achievements.
Anna Banick, Bethany Leap, Hope Saunders, Austin Toney and Tessa Walsh all received recognition during the ceremony.
"Gardner-Webb Swimming has had the highest standards academically from the beginning of the program 19 years ago," said Simpson. "We are extremely proud of these five student-athletes who have upheld that standard. Being recognized by the faculty for achievement in the classroom is a huge honor. Congrats to Austin, Anna, Bethany, Tessa and Hope."
Anna Banick – Spanish Award
Banick, a native of Knoxville, Tennessee, was honored with the Spanish Award. Banick is music major and has a 3.66 over her first three years. For the fall of 2017, she had an impressive 3.53 GPA. Banick was a member of the 2017-18 Coastal Collegiate Swimming Assocaiton (CCSA) All-Academic team, which named members at the end of the conference tournament
Bethany Leap – First-Year German Award
Leap, a sophomore student-athlete from Sarasota, Florida, received the First-Year Germany award at the awards day gathering. Leap boasts an impressive 3.96 cumulative GPA and is majoring in Global Studies. For the fall, she had a 3.93 GPA, and the women's swimming program had the third highest GPA in the country. She was also named to the CCSA All-Academic team at the end of the 2017-18 season.
Hope Saunders – Communications Award
Saunders, a senior Communications Studies major from Lakeland, Florida received the Communications Award. In the classroom, she had an impressive 3.80 GPA in for the fall of 2017 and has a 3.59 cumulative GPA.
Austin Toney – Outstanding Sport Education Major Award
Toney, a senior from Grover, North Carolina, was presented the outstanding Sport Education Major Award by department chair Dr. Ken Baker. Toney boasts a cumulative 3.50 GPA on a 4.0 scale and had a 3.66 GPA in the fall semester. Toney was named to the CCSA All-Academic team at the conference meet earlier this season.
Tessa Walsh – Global Studies Award
Walsh was presented with the Global Studies Award and had a perfect 4.00 GPA for the fall semester. The native of Christiansburg, Va boasts a 3.79 career GPA.
