Records Fall in Final Day of 2018 Big South Outdoor Track & Field Championships

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb men's and women's track and field teams wrapped up competition at the 2018 Big South Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday, breaking a pair of school records with four new personal records set.
 
Jordan Smith took home the men's hammer throw title with a career-best distance of 54.88 meters, which ranks sixth in GWU history.  Ross Lucia earned a fourth-place finish, setting a new PR with a mark of 51.76 meters, which ranks ninth in school history.
 
In the men's 4x100-meter relay, the team of Mason Marshall, Carlos Williams, Austin Billiot and Chase Thornhill placed third with a time of 41.19 seconds.  That time set a new GWU record, breaking a record of 41.45 seconds set by the same team at the Mountaineer Open earlier this season.
 
Thornhill also set a school record in the men's 400-meter run, timing in at 46.82 seconds to finish in second place.  That bested a time of 46.95 seconds set by Marlon Greenword in 2000.
 
The men's 4x400 relay team of Caleb Silvey, Carlos Williams, Patrick Sastre, and Thornhill timed in at 3:15.57 to finish in third place, the second-fastest time in the event in school history.
 
Smith earned Big South Men's Outstanding Field Performer honors for his efforts for the weekend, while Thornhill was named the Big South Men's Freshman of the Year.
 
Karin Sastre placed sixth in the women's pole vault with a mark of 3.47 meters.  Sarah Coleman placed tenth at 3.32 meters.
 
Austin Evans took home a sixth-place result in the men's 110-meters, timing in at 16.52 meters.
 
Carlos Williams set a new PR in the men's 200-meter dash, clocking in at 21.79 seconds, the third-fastest time in program history.  Williams also placed eighth in the men's 100-meter dash at 10.84 seconds.
 
Patrick Sastre took home an eighth-place finish in the men's 800-meter run with a time of 1:59.12.
 
The women's 4x400 meter relay team of Hannah Sparacio, Diviana Forrest, Hannah Jones, and Kelsey Houser finished in seventh-place, timing in at 4:03.26.
 
In the women's 1,500-meter run, Jenika Hrushka finished eleventh with a time of 5:06.02.
 
Keaton Poole finished in fifteenth in the men's 1,500-meter run, clocking in at 4:22.78.  Bogdan Podgaisky followed with a time of 4:55.24, finishing in fifteenth.
 
In the women's 5,000-meter run, Gabby Cortese placed seventeenth with a time of 20:08.59, followed by Logan McGuirt, who clocked in at eighteenth place with a time of 22:03.19.
 
The men's team finished fifth overall, while the women's squad earned an eighth-place finish.  Liberty took home both the men's and women's titles.
 
Josh Parks and Ashleigh Cleveland earned spots on the Big South All-Academic teams.
