June 26, 2018 | Swimming
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb head coach Mike Simpson announced the men and women's swimming 2018-19 schedule today, which features three meets at Bost Pool and the CCSA Championships in late-February.
"We are very excited about our challenging schedule for the next season, which will best prepare us for conference and the rest of the championship season," said Simpson. "Highlights of our schedule include a return trip to Savannah and Jacksonville to face national champion SCAD & conference rivals FAU, UNF and GSU."
Continued Simpson: "We're also looking forward to visiting the conference championship host Liberty and competing with BYU and Mt St Mary's. The team is excited to once again compete against Division II national champion Queens, and a nationally ranked squad in Wingate, as well as Davidson, UNCW, and conference up-and-comer UNCA."
The Runnin' Bulldogs will begin their 2018-19 campaign in Savannah, Georgia, as the women will swim against Georgia Southern on September 28, while both the men and women will take on Savannah College of Art and Design that same day.
Last season, the Gardner-Webb ladies welcomed Georgia Southern to Bost Pool in October and were victorious, 184-76.
The following day, the teams will head to Jacksonville, Florida to compete against Florida Atlantic. The women will also race against North Florida. The meet will take place at the Bolles School.
Less than one week later, Simpson's crew will swim at Bost Pool for the first time in 2018-19, as the men face off against nearby Catawba College and the women take on Campbell.
Following nearly a three-week break, both teams will hit the road and head to Liberty University for a two-day meet on October 26-27. At Liberty, both the men and women will compete against BYU and Old Dominion, while the men will also take on Mt. St. Mary's, and the women will swim against the host school.
In 2018, the program split with Old Dominion, with the women earning a 143-119 victory, while the men suffered a 155-102 defeat. In two meets against Campbell last season, the women's squad went 1-1. The women finished 2017-18 with an 0-1 mark against Liberty, falling 166.5-94.5 in October 2017.
After swimming at Liberty, the men will not return to the pool until Mid-November, but the ladies will make the short trip to Asheville, N.C. to swim against the UNC Asheville Bulldogs on November 2.
Last season, the ladies from Gardner-Webb defeated UNCA, 202-176, winning five of the 10 events en route to their first win of the year.
Two weeks after the women face off against the Bulldogs, both squads will compete for three days at the Fall Frenzy (November 16-18) at the Mecklenburg (N.C.) County Aquatic Center in Charlotte, N.C. The Fall Frenzy will conclude the Runnin' Bulldogs' fall portion of the schedule.
The 'Dogs will open 2019 when Wingate visits Gardner-Webb on Saturday, January 12.
Last season, the Runnin' Bulldogs split with nationally ranked Division II Wingate on the road. The men fell to the ninth-ranked Bulldogs, 138.5-66.5, while the women toppled the 13th ranked Wingate ladies, 120-85.
After taking on the 'Dogs of Wingate, Gardner-Webb will travel to UNC-Wilmington on the following Saturday for a meet in Seahawk Natatorium. Last year, UNCW swept Gardner-Webb in a January meet at Bost Pool.
The Runnin' Bulldogs' final regular season meet will take place on February 2 when the Davidson Wildcats visit GWU. The meet will be senior day for the Runnin' Bulldogs. Last season, the Gardner-Webb women defeated the Wildcats, 157-123, while the men's squad lost a 165-97 decision.
Following the meet against Davidson, the two teams will not compete until they head to Lynchburg, Virginia for the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) Championships.
At last year's championships, both teams finished third. A total of 151 lifetime bests and 12 new school records were set at the conference meet. Gardner-Webb boasted three conference champions and had five swimmers set NCAA 'B' cut times.
After the conference championships, eligible swimmers will compete at the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) National Invitational in March or at the NCAA Championships.
The NCAA Championships will take place in Austin, Tx., with the women's championship being held March 21-23 and the men's championship taking place from March 28-30.
