BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – A trio of Gardner-Webb swimmers – Jordan Mintz, Lara Siebrecht and Tessa Walsh – were named an Honorable Mention Scholar All-American by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America.
The CSCAA named 1,069 swimmers and divers to the All-America teams, which recognizes student-athletes that achieved a 3.50 or higher GPA and competed at their respective championships. 181 colleges and universities had student-athletes honored as a CSCAA Scholar All-American.
Mintz, a sophomore from Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina, finished the spring semester with a 3.83 GPA. He is a computer science major and competed in the breaststroke and IM events. Mintz capped off his sophomore campaign by being named to the CCSA All-Conference and All-Academic teams. At the CCSA championships, he finished fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke event and set a relay split record (as part of the 400-yard medley relay team) with a time of 54.74 seconds. At the CSCAA National Invitational, Mintz competed in five events, with the highlight being a runner-up finish in the 200-yard breaststroke B final.
"I am very proud of Jordan," said head coach Mike Simpson. "He truly is a student-athlete. He works so hard in the classroom and duplicates that same effort in the water. Jordan has big goals and will achieve them because of his drive and work ethic."
Siebrecht, a sophomore from Germany, competed in the backstroke and freestyle events in the pool and finished the spring semester with a 3.93 GPA. She is majoring in Political Science. Siebrecht was also named to the CCSA All-Conference team following the conference championships and set a team record for the 100-yard backstroke split. Additionally, she made an NCAA 'B' cut in the 200-yard backstroke, which earned her an invitation to the CSCAA National Invitational. In the process of achieving a 'B' cut, Siebrecht bettered her own record for the event, which she initially set during the 2016-17 season. She placed 10th in the B final at the National Invitational.
Walsh, a junior who hails from Christiansburg, Virginia, is majoring in Global Studies. She finished the spring semester with a perfect 4.0 GPA and had a stellar season in the pool. At the conference championships, Walsh made in NCAA 'B' cut in the 100-yard fly with an eighth-place finish. Additionally, in the 200-yard fly, she broke two minutes for the first time in her career and lowered her own school record to 1:59.54. At the CSCAA National Invitational, she competed in four events. Her best finish was a fourth-place showing in the 200-yard butterfly B final.
"Lara and Tessa both made fantastic strides in the pool this season and still did incredible work in their respective academic fields," said Simpson. "Our entire staff is very proud of both of them for this accomplishment."
