Bernardina Sets National Records at Centroamerican and Caribbean Games

Barranquilla, Columbia – Following a fantastic freshman campaign in the pool, Gardner-Webb swimmer Seggio Bernardina had a strong summer, setting two Curacao national records at the Centroamerican and Caribbean games.
At the games, Bernardina made the B final in both the 100-meter butterfly and 100-meter freestyle events
In the 100-meter butterfly, he placed fourth in the B final (12th overall), with a time of 55.59 seconds. Guatemala's Mendez Martinez won the event, finishing the race in 52.20 seconds.
In the 100-meter freestyle event, Bernardina came home 20th overall, completing the race in 52.17 seconds. Trinidad and Tobago's Dylan Carter won the event.
Bernardina's times in the two events were also personal records.
Bernardina had a stellar freshman season in the water for the Runnin' Bulldogs, earning two podium finishes at the CSCAA National Invitational, while also claiming two victories and a pair of podium finishes at the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) Championships.
At the CCSA Championships, Bernardina was part of the 200-yard medley relay, 200-yard freestyle relay, 400-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay teams.
Each of the four relay teams that Bernardina was a part of earned podium finishes, with the 200 and 400-yard freestyle teams each earning the victory. Additionally, his 100-yard butterfly split of 48.08 seconds as part of the 400-yard medley relay, set a new team record.
Bernardina also placed second in the 100-yard butterfly event and earned CCSA All-Conference honors following the four-day event.
Bernardina and his Gardner-Webb teammates will begin competition for the 2018-19 season on September 28 at the Savannah College of Art and Design meet. The women will swim against Georgia Southern, while the both the men and women will take on SCAD-Savannah.
