ATHENS, Ga. – Head coach
Mike Griffith's men's tennis team opened its fall season at the 51
st Annual Southern Intercollegiate Championships this past weekend.
Breno Plentz led the team, winning the Division II Quadrant A Championship.
"It was a huge tournament with over 150 players from 26 universities," said head coach
Mike Griffith. "Not only was the host school playing (Georgia), but you had the No. 1 ranked team in NAIA and NCAA Division II there, along with universities from the Southern Conference, Big South, ACC, and CAA. Even if a player get's beat, it's great experience for them to watch the winners play."
Continued Griffith: "It was a great learning experience, and we started the season on a good note. Next weekend will be another huge opportunity to show we can play with anyone on our schedule at the James Bonk Invite at Duke University."
Below are details on each player's performance over the course of the four-day event held on the campus of the University of Georgia.
Millen Hurrion – Division I Quadrant A
Hurrion began his sophomore year facing off against the tournament's overall No. 1 seed, Jan Zielinksi of Georgia. After falling in straight sets to Zielinksi, he defeated Lander's Eirik Groner, 6-2, 6-1 to advance to the consolation finals where he was scheduled to competed against Barry University's Ignasi Forcano, but the match was cancelled.
Maximilian Scholl – Division I Quadrant H
The 16
th overall seed in the Division I bracket, Scholl began play with a 6-2, 6-2 win over UNCW's Austin Hussey, before defeating Arkansas' Adam Sanjurjo to advance to the Round of 16 on Saturday. Scholl suffered a three-set defeat, two of which went into tiebreakers, against Virginia Tech's Carlo Donato. The match was also the Quadrant H championship match, which gave Scholl quadrant runner-up status.
Breno Plentz – Division II Quadrant A
Plentz cruised through the Quadrant A bracket in Division II singles, winning the championship. In his first match, Plentz was victorious, 6-0, 6-1 over UNCG's Ian Melnik, and the following day he defeated Carver Arant (Mercer) in the Round of 32. With a two-set victory on Saturday, he won the quadrant championship and advanced to Sunday's bracket Quarterfinals, where he defeated UNCW's Dillion Googh. He then faced his second consecutive Seahawk opponent, falling to Daniel Groom in the bracket semifinals, 3-6, 4-6.
Johan Fors – Division II Quadrant C
Fors competed in Quadrant C and fell to the bracket's No. 3 seed, Georgia's Blake Croyder, before losing in three sets to Kennesaw State's Drew Lahey, 6-2, 5-7, 9-11. In the consolation semifinals, Fors was defeated by Lipscomb's Jake Penny.
Stefano Puga – Division II Quadrant E
After an opening round victory over Jack Sorel of Kennesaw State, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, Puga fell to UNCW's Cole Grotesch in the Round of 32, 0-6, 1-6. In the consolation semifinals, he was defeated by Virginia Tech's Chase Bernstine in straight sets.
Sebastian Harris – Division II Quadrant G
In his first tournament as a Runnin' Bulldog, Harris fell to seventh-seeded Juan Sebastian Osorio by a pair of 6-3 scores, before battling ETSU's Mark Papadopolous. Harris was ultimately defeated, 1-6, 2-6, but won his consolation semifinal match over UNCW's Roger Rogowski, 7-5, 1-6, 11-9
Nicolas Ulehla – Division III Quadrant B
Ulehla had a strong showing in his first collegiate tournament, cruising to the quadrant championship before falling in the bracket semifinals on Sunday. To begin play, he defeated Chattanooga's Bo Nash, 6-2, 7-5, earning a spot in the Round of 16 against App State's Alex Brea. Ulehla topped Brea in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1 before defeating Lipscomb's David Skrabut in the quadrant championship. After losing the first set, Ulehla rebounded to win the final two sets, 6-3 and 6-2 respectively. In his final match of the tournament, he was defeated in the bracket semifinals by No. 1 seed Gaston Mohammed (Kennesaw State), 0-6, 2-6.
Jacob Wall – Divsiion III Quadrant C
Wall earned a first-round bye in his bracket and began play Friday morning against Lipscomb's George Wong. Wong defeated Wall in straight sets. In the consolation semis, Wall won the opening set against Austin Anderson of Kennesaw State, 6-4, but was defeated in sets two and three as Anderson won the match.
Bonventura Durall – Division III Quadrant D
After earning a bye in the Round of 32 on Friday, Durall, the No. 2 overall seed, fell to Columbus State's Fabien Asdrubal, 1-6, 4-6. In the consolation semifinals, he earned his first victory in a Gardner-Webb uniform, defeating Campbell Stone (App State), 7-6(5), 6-3.
Doubles Action
Scholl and Hurrion, the No. 15 seed in the Division I bracket, opened doubles competition with a bye before defeating Luca Silva and Rafael Torsetto of Tennessee Tech, 8-1. The duo then faced off against fifth-seeded Alvaro Regalado and Zach Whaanga and lost, 6-8.
Wall and Puga played in the Division II doubles bracket and were victorious by an 8-4 score in their first match before falling to Lipscomb's Jake Penny and Francesco Tacconi, the No. 5 seed.
Plentz and Fors also won their first-round match, defeating a duo from Stetson by an 8-3 score before falling to fourth-seeded Nico Grewe and Oliver Palmer, 5-8.
Durall and Harris suffered an opening round loss to Arkansas' Josh Bortnick and Enrique Paya.
