Turlington Leads Gardner-Webb Past Radford, 2-1

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Maddie Turlington capped off a stellar week by scoring both goals for Gardner-Webb in a 2-1 win over the Radford Highlanders on Saturday night.

Turlington, who now has three goals to go along with five assists on the season, scored her first collegiate goal in a mid-week victory against USC Upstate.

"Maddie was fantastic this week," said head coach Mike Varga. "She came in tonight and did what she's done all season, which is give us a huge spark. She changed the momentum of the game for us with a first-touch goal, and then added a second goal just minutes later."

Turlington entered the game in the 22nd minute and scored less than two minutes later when she received a ball from Samuelle Grove and placed one past Radford's Courtenay Kaplan to put the 'Dogs in front.

In the 29th minute, Turlington added her second goal to the box score. Grove passed the ball to Stina Kleppe, who found Turlington in the center of the field 20 yards from the net. Turlington's shot went through the legs of Kaplan, as the Runnin' Bulldogs extended their lead to 2-0.

"It was a team effort," said Turlington. I was in a good spot when my teammates sent the ball to me and was able to convert. It still feels unreal to be playing college soccer and scoring. It was a good win for us, and we want to continue on that path."

Gardner-Webb threatened in the final 15 minutes of the opening period with four additional shots on goal, but was unable to find the back of the net a third time.

Keely Brown made four saves for the Runnin' Bulldogs in the first 45 minutes of play.

Following the intermission, 20 minutes into the final period, the Highlanders began threatening, but Brown saved three shots in a two-minute span, while another attempt was blocked by the Gardner-Webb defense.

Radford scored in the 76th minute when Kayla Thomas headed one past Brown following a corner kick, making it a 2-1 game.

The Highlanders nearly netted the equalizer less than 10 minutes later but were called offsides.

As the visitors continued to look to tie the contest late in the game, Brown remained steady in goal, saving all three of Radford's shots on goal in the final four minutes to seal the victory for the Runnin' Bulldogs. The senior from Cincinnati, Ohio made 10 saves in the match.

"We were under tremendous pressure in the second half," said Varga. I give credit to Radford. They fought the entire game and made it difficult for us. We have a great back line in Keely and our defenders. We were very fortunate to come away with a win."

Radford outshot Gardner-Webb, 19-12, and had an 11-8 advantage in attempts on goal. The visitors earned 10 corner kicks, while the Runnin' Bulldogs had nine.

Gardner-Webb improves to 5-3-2 overall and remains undefeated in Big South Conference play. The Highlanders drop to 5-2-1 overall and 1-1 in the Big South.

The Runnin' Bulldogs will return to action on Wednesday, September 26, when they travel to Winthrop for a battle with the Eagles, who are also 2-0 in BSC action. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
