DAVIDSON, N.C. – Gardner-Webb saved its best round for the final day of action at the 2018 River Run Collegiate, rallying to move into ninth place by the end of Tuesday's action.
The event was played at 7,208-yard River Run Country Club (Par 72).
The Runnin' Bulldogs trimmed nine strokes off of Monday's round, shooting a 291 as a team on Tuesday. That left Gardner-Webb five strokes in front of 10th-place Elon and eight strokes off the pace of William & Mary.
James Madison edged Furman by one stroke to win the team title.
Steffen Smith finished in a tie for 17th to pace Gardner-Webb's individuals (71-74-74-219). Smith was red hot to begin Tuesday's action, carding four birdies over his first nine holes – finishing with a 2-under par (34) at the turn.
Smith finished in fifth place among tournament participants with 12 birdies over three rounds.
Jonathan Henry tied for 28th overall (79-73-72-224), overcoming a tough start to the tournament with an even par 72 on Tuesday.
Andy Yang (79-77-72-228) finished tied for 42nd after shooting even par on Tuesday as well.
Zack Byers (80-77-73-230) was just off Yang's pace in a tie for 49th and
Patrick Wu (79-78-78-235) finished tied for 63rd.
Gardner-Webb will be back in action quickly, traveling to Sapphire, N.C., for the 2018 Hummingbird Intercollegiate hosted by Western Carolina on October 1-2.
