Men’s Swimming Defeats Wingate, 141-121, Saturday Afternoon

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb men's swimming team picked up nine event wins, along with 30 top-five finishes en route to a 141-121 win over Wingate on Saturday afternoon.
 
Action began with the 200-yard medley relay, which saw the team of Brady Fields, Jordan Mintz, Cullen Fields, and Tim Bennett place first with a time of 1:33.73.  The grouping of John O'Connell, Chase Mattingly, Brendan Teeters and Zach Dingfield placed third at 1:37.54.
 
Peter Wakeley placed second in the 1,000-yard freestyle, clocking in at 9:47.48.  Drew Peden placed fifth at 10:17.07.
 
GWU claimed the top-two finishes in the 200-yard freestyle, as Tim Bennett timed in first at 1:44.81, followed by Chase Mattingly at 1:45.02.
 
In the 100-yard backstroke, Joshua Clarke earned a fourth-place finish, timing in at 54.33 seconds.
 
Jonathan Frye took home the 100-yard breaststroke title, touching the wall at 58.38 seconds.  Jordan Mintz placed third overall at 58.91 seconds.
 
Cullen Fields finished in second place in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:56.22.  John O'Connell followed in third, clocking in at 1:58.26.
 
Zach Dingfield placed first overall in the 50-yard freestyle, timing in at 21.55 seconds. Brady Fields placed fourth at 22.04 seconds, followed by Jonathan Frye at 22.25 seconds.
 
Dingfield also finished first overall in the 100-yard freestyle, touching the wall at 47.68 seconds.  Tim Bennett finished in fourth place with a time of 48.50 seconds.
 
In the 200-yard backstroke, Cullen Fields placed fifth with a time of 1:57.11.
 
Jordan Mintz finished first in the 200-yard breaststroke, clocking in at 2:09.53.  Brendan Teeters placed fourth at 2:16.26, followed by Christian Jann in fifth at 2:16.36.
 
In the 500-yard freestyle, Peter Wakeley earned a fifth place result, timing in at 4:51.32.
 
Cullen Fields took home the 100-yard butterfly title with a time of 50.72 seconds.  John O'Connell finished third overall, timing in at 51.88 seconds.
 
The 'Dogs had the top three times in the men's 200-yard IM, led by Chase Mattingly with atime of 1:56.80.  Christian Jann followed at 1:58.08 and Jordan Mintz clocked in at 1:59.88.
 
The day wrapped up with the 400-yard freestyle relay, where the team of Tim Bennett, Chase Mattingly, Brady Fields, and Zach Dingfield placed first with a time of 3:12.79.  The team of Jonathan Frye, Christian Jann, Joshua Clarke, and Peter Wakeley followed in second at 3:14.59, and the team of Dowdy Sarvis, Nelson Montini, Drew Peden, and Will Anderson placed fourth overall at 3:22.80.
 
Gardner-Webb returns to action next Saturday afternoon, hitting the road to face off against UNC Wilmington.  Action is slated for an 11:00 am start time.
