CHARLESTON, S.C. – Gardner-Webb picked up three wins, but would fall to The Citadel by a 30-12 score in Southern Conference wrestling action at McAlister Field House on Wednesday evening.
The Citadel improved to 1-6 overall and 1-0 in SoCon action, while GWU now sits at 2-7 overall and 0-2 in SoCon bouts.
The weight class order for the dual was decided using experimental NCAA rules, where the team that won a coin toss decided the opening matchup, and the two coaches alternated turns picking the following matchups.
The Citadel took an early 16-0 advantage over Gardner-Webb, picking up forfeit wins at 133 and 125 pounds, followed by a 16-3 major decision by Selwyn Porter over
Austin Reames at 149 pounds
The Runnin' Bulldogs bounced back in the following matchup, as
Kyle Homet rallied from a 5-4 deficit after two periods to earn a 9-6 decision over Kyle Kretzer at 174 pounds. GWU also earned a forfeit win at 141 pounds to set the score at 16-9.
The Citadel regained control of the dual, earning major decision wins at 197 and 184 pounds, followed by a decision at the 285-pound weight class.
Tyler Marinelli picked up a 6-0 decision over Dazjon Casto at 165 pounds to improve to 8-0 overall in dual matches this season.
The Citadel would wrap up the evening by picking up a decision at 157 pounds.
Gardner-Webb returns home for its next bout, hosting Chattanooga on Friday, February 1. The match is scheduled for a 7:00 pm start time with live coverage on ESPN+.
