Runnin' Bulldogs Fall Short in Overtime Contest at Hampton, 82-80

HAMPTON, Va. – Ky'Asia Stanford scored a team-high 24 points and not only forced overtime but pulled the Runnin' Bulldogs within a point with eight seconds left, but Gardner-Webb fell to Hampton, 82-80.

The two teams opened the contest with a cold shooting spell, going a combined 3-of-27 to begin the game. Gardner-Webb took 17 of the first 27 shots and hit just two. After the first 10 minutes, GWU trailed by a point, 8-7.

The lid came off the basket for both teams in the second quarter, as the two squads nearly tripled the first quarter scoring. Each squad scored 20 points and Gardner-Webb trailed at the intermission, 28-27.

Gardner-Webb (10-9, 4-3 Big South) trailed by as many as 10 points in the second, but after cutting the lead to seven, 24-17, ended the half on a 10-4 run to pull within one at the half.

Four different players – Stanford, Jhessyka Williams, Carley Plentovich and Savannah Plentovich – each scored over the final 2:37 for the Runnin' Bulldogs. The 'Dogs final basket came from S. Plentovich and was assisted by her twin.

The Runnin' Bulldogs shot just 11.8 percent (2-of-17) in the first quarter, but hit 42.9 percent (6-of-4) of its shots in the second quarter. Hampton poured in 20 points over the second 10 minutes and shot a scorching 61.5 percent (8-of-13).

Gardner-Webb took a two-point lead early in the third quarter thanks to hot shooting from Williams who hit her first two shots of the period, but it did not last.

Trailing 32-30 with 7:51 to go in the quarter, Hampton more than doubled the Runnin' Bulldogs' point total, going on a 15-7 run to lead by six at the end of the period.

The Pirates were unable to carry the momentum into the early parts of the final period as Gardner-Webb quickly pulled within a point. Freshman Robyn Bouwer hit her third three-pointer of the last two contests, while C. Plentovich's layup less than 90 seconds into the quarter made it a 45-44 game in favor of the Pirates.

With 34 seconds remaining, Stanford tied the game via an old-fashioned three-point play and immediately forced a turnover with 11 seconds left, but Williams' would turn it over, giving the Pirates a chance to win the game at the buzzer.

Hampton's Mahley Holt's jumper was off the mark, and the two teams played an extra five minutes.

Gardner-Webb came on strong with only 17 seconds remaining in extra time, thanks to the play of Stanford. After a timeout, Stanford converted another and-1 and helped force a Pirates turnover.

With five seconds left, the Runnin' Bulldogs forced a turnover, but an offensive foul helped Hampton sneak out an 82-80 victory.

Stanford led Gardner-Webb with 24 points on 50 percent shooting. Williams (18) points and C. Plentovich (17) also scored in double figures, while Gabrielle Caponegro led the team with nine rebounds.

Hampton was led by Lauren Varnarsdale's 26 points. The Pirates shot 42.4 percent compared to 38.5 percent for the Runnin' Bulldogs.

Gardner-Webb will return to action on Tuesday, January 29, when it hosts Charleston Southern. The game between the Runnin' Bulldogs and Bucs can be seen on ESPN3 and will tip at 6 p.m.
