BOONE, N.C. – Gardner-Webb picked up wins at 141, 165, and 174 pounds, but the Runnin' Bulldogs would fall to Appalachian State by a 39-10 score in the Southern Conference opener for both teams on Tuesday evening.
 
Gardner-Webb (2-4, 1-0 SoCon) fell behind quickly, as the Mountaineers (3-5, 1-0 SoCon) claimed decisions by pin at 197 and 285 pounds, followed by a pair of forfeits at 125 and 133 pounds to take a 24-0 lead.
 
The Runnin' Bulldogs got on the board at 141 pounds, as Blake Mulkey earned a 7-4 decision over reigning SoCon champion Irvin Enriquez.  Mulkey has picked up victories in each of his last two dual matches.
 
Appalachian State would take the following matches at 149 and 157 pounds before the 'Dogs got back in the win column at 165 pounds as Tyler Marinelli earned a 13-0 major decision over Michael Elliott. The redshirt senior improves to 5-0 in dual matches on the year and currently sits at 12-2 overall.
 
GWU picked up another win at 174 pounds as Kyle Homet defeated Joe Accousti by a tight 5-3 decision, his fifth dual match win of the season
 
App State wrapped up the evening by taking a decision by fall at 184 pounds.
 
Gardner-Webb returns to action this Saturday afternoon, taking on Franklin and Marshall College at 12:00 pm at St. Christopher's School in Richmond, Va.
