Plentz Leads Gardner-Webb at Limestone Challenger

GAFFNEY, S.C. – Head coach Mike Griffith took the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs men's tennis team to Limestone College where they competed in the Limestone Challenger for two days against Limestone and USC Upstate. Breno Plentz led the 'Dogs with a 6-0 record.
"It was a great weekend of matches vs. Limestone and also fellow Big South opponent USC Upstate," said Griffith. "We got a lot better, and it was a fun weekend. We accomplished a lot."
In three rounds of doubles on Friday, Gardner-Webb posted a strong showing. The 'Dogs went a combined 5-1 through the first two rounds.
In round one, Plentz and Stefano Puga (6-1) and Connor Enslin and Victor Putter (6-2) beat two teams from Limestone, outscoring them by a combined 12-3 score. Jacob Wall and Sebastian Harris earned a 6-4 win over upstate's Mueller and Guilherme Dinz, 6-4.
In the second round of doubles action, Gardner-Webb went 3-0. Harris and Jacob Wall eeked out a 7-6 win over Garnier and Sacha Terrizzano, 7-6. The duo's of Puga and Plentz and Enslin and Putter won their matches with scores of 6-3 and 6-2 respectively. To conclude doubles play Plentz and Puga defeated Russwurm and Sydow, 6-4, while Enslin and Putter came away with a 6-4 victory over Dinz and Mueller.
The Runnin' Bulldogs went 6-1 in singles play on the first day of action, and all six of their victories came in straight sets. Plentz was the only Runnin' Bulldog to battle an opponent from USC Upstate. He defeated Dinz, 6-4, 7-5. Harris, Putter, Puga, Ross Gilbert and Wall all defeated players from Limestone.
Harris got the better of Marcel Abbegne, 6-3, 6-1, and Putter dropped just three games to the Saints' Terrizzano in his 6-1, 6-2 victory.
Puga defeated Clement Torres (6-2, 6-1) to finish the weekend a combined 4-0, and Gilbert bested Dovydas Sadauskas by an identical score. On court six, Wall defeated Rollins Tucker in two sets, 6-2, 6-2.
Enslin suffered a tough three-set loss to Limestone's Pierluigi Neri despite winning the first set.
On Saturday, Gardner-Webb went a perfect 3-0 in doubles action. Puga and Plentz cruised to a 6-2 win over the Spartans' Denise and Muhler, while Enslin and Putter defeated the Sadauskas brothers, 6-2. Wall and Harris finished off doubles action with a 6-3 defeat of Neri and Agbegra from Limestone.
Putter kicked off singles play with a 6-3, 6-1 victory on court one, and Enslin rebounded from a tough Friday defeat to beat Upstate's Diaz, 6-7, 6-2, 10-6.
Plentz earned a two-set win over Neri, 6-4, 6-2, and Puga concluded the day with a three-set defeat of Limestone's Sadauskas. After winning set one, 6-4, Puga dropped the second set but dominated the super tiebreaker, 10-1, to earn the victory.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will hit the courts for practice early next week before heading to Cary, N.C. for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regionals. Play is scheduled to begin on Friday, October 18 with the finals being played on Tuesday, October 23.
