
Scruggs Leads Gardner-Webb To Team Title At 2019 Elon Phoenix Invitational

BURLINGTON, N.C. – Behind a record-setting tournament by Jake Scruggs, the Gardner-Webb men's golf team captured the 2019 Elon Phoenix Invitational Tuesday afternoon at Alamance Country Club.
Scruggs was the tournament's medalist after scorching the 6,706-yard Donald J. Ross designed course over two days and 54 holes. The Shelby, N.C., native shot an opening round 68, then sank 11 birdies to tie a course record with a second-round of 61.
Scruggs didn't let up on Tuesday, carding eight more birdies to shoot a 6-under par 65 to finish five strokes ahead of second-place Connor Schmidt of Drexel.
Scruggs was at his best on Par 4 holes, shooting 11-under par combined for the tournament – which was the top mark in the field by five strokes. He also shot a strong 10-under par on Par 5 holes and his 24 birdies led the field by a wide margin.
Senior Steffen Smith did his best to keep up with Scruggs' sizzling pace, shooting a 67 over his second 18 holes on Monday. He finished the tournament with a 2-under par 69 on Tuesday to finish in a tie for 14th.
Zack Byers (72-70-70-212) finished at 1-under par for the tournament and in a tie for 28th. Miles Albright (74-71-73-218) took 53rd and Andy Yang (75-76-78-229) finished 90th for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (287-269-277-833) used a two-stroke advantage over the final 18 holes to top Morehead State (280-275-279-834) by a single stroke by the end of 54 holes. Gardner-Webb shot 7-under par as a team on Tuesday.
Head coach Tee Burton's team will take a long break before getting back on the course, next traveling to Kiawah Island, S.C., for the East Bay Deli Collegiate on November 4-5. That event will wrap up the fall season for Gardner-Webb, with the spring slate set to begin on February 24 at the 2020 Wexford Intercollegiate (Hilton Head, S.C.).
