October 17, 2019 | Men's Golf
CHARLOTTE – Gardner-Webb's Jake Scruggs was named Big South Conference Men's Golfer of the Week on Thursday, following a stellar week on the links.
The Shelby, N.C., native won the individual title at the 2019 Elon Phoenix Invitational – and led Gardner-Webb to a one-stroke win for the team trophy as well.
Scruggs didn't just win the tournament, he dominated – consistently – through each of the event's three rounds. After shooting a strong round of 68 to open play on Monday morning, Scruggs caught fire – carding 11 birdies in the second round to tie the Alamance Country Club scoring mark of 61.
He didn't let up, firing a 65 on Tuesday to clinch the title. Scruggs finished the 54-hole tournament with a score of 194, a staggering 19 shots under par. He was five strokes ahead of the field.
Scruggs led the tournament with 24 birdies, shot 11-under par on Par 4 holes and 10-under par on Par 5 holes.
He and the Runnin' Bulldogs will be back on the links November 4-5 on Kiawah Island, S.C., for the annual East Bay Deli Collegiate – hosted by Charleston Southern.
