Runnin' Bulldogs to Host Winthrop in Big South Quarterfinals Tomorrow Night

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – For the second consecutive year, Mike Varga's Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs will host the Winthrop Eagles in Big South women's soccer quarterfinal match.

The 2019 quarterfinal matchup between the fourth-seeded Runnin' Bulldogs and #5 Winthrop Eagles is set for Friday, November 1 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 for adults and $2 for students. For those unable to make the match, all the action can be seen live on ESPN+.

Gardner-Webb finished the regular season tied for third in the conference standings with the Radford Highlanders. Radford won the tiebreaker, and earned the three seed, but the #4 seed still gave the Runnin' Bulldogs homefield advantage.

The Runnin' Bulldogs finished the regular season 8-10-1 overall and an impressive 7-3-0 in league play. Winthrop finished above .500 in regular season play, winning eight matches with just six defeats and one draw. The Eagles ended the regular season with a 6-3-1 Big South record.

Senior midfielder Stina Kleppe (Skien, Norway / Dahlske Videregaende Skole) led the team offensively. Kleppe scored 11 goals in 19 matches, which placed her second in the league behind Campbell's Alexa Genas' 12. Five of her 11 goals were game-winners. Kleppe finished third in both points (27) and points per game (1.42)

Sophomore forward Maddie Turlington (Roanoke, Texas / Byron Nelson HS) was also an offensive threat with five goals and 8 assists. Turlington's eight assists placed her fourth among all Big South players, and she was only three away from being the league leader. That honor when to someone who will be on the sideline opposite Gardner-Webb on Friday – Winthrop's Keeley Leising. Leising assisted on 10 goals in the regular season.

Jada Newton (Woodbridge, Va. / Osborn Park HS) was the third and final Runnin' Bulldog to reach double-digit points. Despite missing three conference games for international duty, Newton tallied 11 points (Five goals and an assist) in 16 appearances.

In goal, both Paula Suarez Is (Oviedo, Spain / Ies La Corredoria) and Katelyn Kellogg (Goshen, Ky. / North Oldham HS) saw significant time for the 'Dogs. Suarez Is started 10 matches and went 4-6-0 overall with 45 stops. Kellogg has been the choice in goal as of late, earning the start in final six matches of the regular season. She has allowed just two goals in those matches and has a record of 4-4-1 overall this season with 68 stops in the net.
