Runnin' Bulldogs Fall Short at Davidson, 4-3, on Tuesday Night

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Gardner-Webb won three singles matches but it wasn't enough to earn a hard-fought road win, as the Davidson Wildcats escaped with a 4-3 victory.

Davidson (4-2) won the doubles with victories at No. 2 and 3 doubles. The Wildcats won both matches with 6-1 scores to take the early lead.

Although the 'Dogs did not begin the match in stellar fashion, they fought back in singles play, winning three of the six contests.

Head coach Mike Griffith, although disappointed with not winning the doubles point, was pleased with the momentum swing in singles.

"We had a tough night in doubles play, but we stepped up and turned the momentum in our favor in singles," said Griffith. "We had several match points and we've got to finish those consistently. If we did that tonight, we would have come away with a hard fought win, but we've just got to move on to the next match and keep getting better."

In singles play, Millen Hurrion and Maximilian Scholl won matches to give the Runnin' Bulldogs a 2-1 lead.

Hurrion defeated Yash Parikh in the No. 2 flight, 6-1, 6-0, while Scholl's match went three sets but ended in his favor.

Playing in the No. 1 flight, Scholl won his fourth match of the year. After dropping the first set, 6-4, the senior from Stuttgart, Germany defeated Stockholm, Sweden native Axel Fries, 6-1 and 6-3 in the final two sets to win the match.

Davidson (4-2) tied the match with a three-set victory in the No. 4 flight, before Johan Fors gave Gardner-Webb a 3-2 lead. Fors was victorious in the No. 5 flight, 6-4, 1-6, 6-2.

The 'Dogs' lead did not last long, however, as the Wildcats were able to come from behind and earn the match victory. The Widlcats tied the contest at three matches each when Sam Kavarana won in the No. 3 flght, and would clinch the match with a win in the No. 6 position.

The match would come down to a battle at No. 6 between Sebastian Harris and Douglas Macintosh. Macintosh got the better of Harris in two sets, 6-3, 7-5, as Davidson escaped with a victory, its fourth of the season.

Gardner-Webb not play again until Wednesday, February 20 at Wofford. First serve between the Runnin' Bulldogs and Terriers will take place at 2:30 p.m. in Spartanburg, SC
