BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Three players scored in double figures, but the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs were unable to defeat the Campbell Fighting Camels, falling 69-63 inside Paul Porter Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Campbell (15-9, 7-6 Big South) took the lead late in the first quarter and never looked back.
The Camels extended their lead to double digits by outscoring the Runnin' Bulldogs, 15-5, in the second quarter.
At the half, Gardner-Webb trailed by 13, 35-12. The Runnin' Bulldogs shot just 8-of-32 (25 percent) over the first 20 minutes and went 1-of-7 from three-point land.
Campbell fared significantly better from the floor in the opening half. The Fighting Camels went 12-of-24 from the field (50 percent) and outrebounded GWU on the glass, 23-16.
The Fighting Camels kept their lead at 10+ points until the fourth when Gardner-Webb mustered up a comeback attempt.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (13-12, 7-6 BSC) clawed their way back from 13 points down.
Gabrielle Caponegro kicked off the final quarter with a jumper but Gardner-Webb's comeback would not truly begin until after the media timeout past the quarter's halfway point.
With 3:03 left, the Runnin' Bulldogs trailed by 11, but a pair of free throws by
Carley Plentovich cut Campbell's lead to single digits.
Moments later,
Ky'Asia Stanford would go 1-for-2 at the charity stripe, making it a 62-54 game in favor of the Fighting Camels.
Savannah Plentovich cut Camels lead to five with a triple off a pass from
Neydja Petithomme. Petithomme would pull the 'Dogs within four with a free throw under 90 seconds to go, but Gardner-Webb could not get any closer.
Campbell pushed its lead back to nine, 67-58, with under a minute remaining, and although the Runnin' Bulldogs would make it a five-point contest with 23 seconds left, the Fighting Camels held on for the 69-63 victory.
S. Plentovich led Gardner-Webb with 18 points on 6-of-15 shooting. Caponegro recorded a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds, while C. Plentovich also scored 14 points. The Runnin' Bulldogs shot 20-of-71 (28.2 percent) for the game.
Campbell was led ShyAnne Tuelle's 18 points. Lauren Carter contributed 16 points, while Taya Bolden added 10 points and collected 15 rebounds.
Gardner-Webb and Campbell split the regular season contests with each team winning on the road. GWU won in Buies Creek, 52-38, on January 7, 2018.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will return to action on Tuesday, February 19 when they host Hampton. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
