February 25, 2019 | Men's Golf
HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Gardner-Webb shot a first round score of 300 Monday, sitting in sixth place after the 18 holes of the 2019 Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate.
The tournament is being played on the 6,913-yard, par 72 Wexford Plantation Course.
Gardner-Webb actually moved into fifth after its second round, but play was suspended due to darkness. The remaining teams will finish the second round for official scoring on Tuesday morning – prior to the start of round three.
GWU shot a team score of 294 in the second round, keyed by Patrick Wu's 71. Wu (74-71-145) sits in a tie for eighth after 36 holes.
Steffen Smith shot an even par 72 to lead the Runnin' Bulldogs and finished his first round tied for 10th individually. The junior standout began his day on the 15th hole and overcame a tough start to the day after a rash of bogeys – and one double bogey – over his first six holes.
Smith sat at +5 heading to hole No. 4, but birdied the 420-yard par 4. After shooting par on the next two holes, Smith sank three-straight birdies and shot 5-under par over his last 11 holes.
Smith finished with a 74 in the second around to remain tied for 10th after 36 holes.
Jonathan Henry (77-72-149), Zack Byers (77-77-154) and Charlie Dallery (80-78-158) rounded out Gardner-Webb's group.
Gardner-Webb is part of a 19-team field for this week's event – which is the first of the spring for Tee Burton's Runnin' Bulldogs.
