DAVIDSON, N.C. – Following a season-opening win at North Carolina A&T, the Gardner-Webb women's tennis team traveled to face in-state foe Davidson and fell to the Wildcats, 6-1.
Davidson won at No. 2 doubles before the Runnin' Bulldogs earned the win in the No. 1 flight. Playing in the top position,
Miljana Ristic and
Daniela Naupari defeated Davidson's Elizabeth Truluck and Megan Scholvinck, 6-4.
The Wildcats won the doubles point by taking the deciding match at No. 3, 6-3.
In singles play, Davidson won three consecutive contests to clinch the match. Gabrielle Centenari defeated Ristic at No. 1, 6-4, 6-2 and Samatha Armas topped
Valentine Limauge by a pair of 6-2 scores.
The Wildcats' Elizabeth Truluck clinched the victory for the home team, but Gardner-Webb would not go down without a victory.
Adrienne Vesely cruised to a 6-3, 6-4 win in the No. 5 position for the Runnin' Bulldogs' lone win in singles play. Vesely is 2-0 in her first two collegiate singles matches with both wins coming in the No. 5 flight.
Davidson ended the match with wins in the No. 6 and No. 2 flights respectively.
Gardner-Webb dropped to 1-1 with the loss, while the Wildcats improved to 5-2.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will return to action next Saturday, February 16, at North Carolina Central. First serve is set for 1 p.m. The 'Dogs will play their home opener on Thursday, February 21, against the Charlotte 49ers at 2 p.m.
