Runnin' Bulldogs Shutout Limestone, 7-0, in Non-Conference Action

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Mike Griffith's Gardner-Webb men's tennis team won its sixth straight match with a 7-0 shutout of the Limestone College Saints on Tuesday afternoon.

"Limestone is very talented, and a solid team," said Griffith. "We struggled at first in doubles and fought back. It was a total team effort and we're playing with nine players, which is certainly a testament to how talented our team is

After 74th-ranked Maximilian Scholl and Millen Hurrion won at No. 1 doubles, 6-1, the No. 2 and 3 flights both went into tiebreakers, but Gardner-Webb won both matches.

At No. 3, Jacob Wall and Bonaventura Durall were victorious, 7-6 (3) to clinch the point for the Runnin' Bulldogs, and Stefano Puga and Breno Plentz finished at No. 2 with a 7-6 (6) win.

As singles play began, 107th-ranked Hurrion was first off the court at No. 2. Hurrion allowed Limestone's Emilio Samhan to win just one game in two sets. The Weymouth, England native won, 6-0, 6-1 and currently has a three-game winning streak.

At No. 6, Sebastian Harris won his second straight match, 6-1, 6-2 over the Saints' Enrique Moreno. Ross Gilbert clinched the match and put GWU up 4-0 with a convincing 6-1, 6-3 victory in the No. 4 flight.

Scholl won his ninth consecutive match at No. 1, defeating Federico Garnier, 6-1, 6-4.

To conclude the day, Johan Fors (No. 5) won, 6-3, 6-2, while Plentz (No. 3) earned a 6-2, 6-4 victory in the No. 3 flight for his third consecutive victory.

The Runnin' Bulldogs are now 6-5 overall and have not lost since February 12. Limestone dropped to 2-6 overall.

The 'Dogs will return to action on Wednesday, March 27 when they host the Blue Hose of Presbyterian College for a 2 p.m. Big South Conference match.
