Mayumi Saguchi Named Big South Women's Tennis Freshman of the Week

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Gardner-Webb's Mayumi Saguchi became the second Runnin' Bulldog women's tennis player to earn Big South Freshman of the Week recognition, the conference office announced today.
Saguchi (Maipu, Argentina / Universidad de la Defensa) joins Adrienne Vesely (Plano, Texas / Spring Creek Academy) as GWU's Freshman of the Week honorees. Vesely was recognized on February 13 and was the conference's first Freshman of the Week winner of the 2019 season.
In two matches last week, Saguchi went undefeated in the No. 4 singles flight. She began the week by clinching the match victory for the 'Dogs against the Wofford Terriers. The Maipu, Argentina native battled Wofford's Kay Kluska and won in two sets, 7-6 (8), 6-2.
On Sunday, Saguchi was instrumental in helping the Runnin' Bulldogs earn their second Big South Conference victory, 5-2, over the Campbell Fighting Camels. After falling to CU's Alexandra Nicoara in the first set, Saguchi won the final two sets, 6-4, 6-4 to earn the win.
Saguchi is 4-2 overall in singles play and is tied with Valentine Limauge for the second-highest winning percentage on the team (.667).
The Ruinnin' Bulldogs are 4-5 overall and 2-1 in the Big South. The 'Dogs will return to action today at Winthrop with a 2 p.m. first serve before heading to Hampton for an 11 a.m. contest on Saturday, March 23.
