March 20, 2019 | Men's Tennis
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - For the second time this season, senior Maximilian Scholl has been named the Big South Conference men's tennis Player of the Week.
"It was great to see Max continue his role this past week, and more importantly he along with his teammates helped us go 2-0 and now to continue our six match winning-streak," said head coach Mike Griffith. "He and his teammates are not finished yet with a huge week coming up."
Scholl went 2-0 in singles play last week to improve to 9-1 overall and extend his winning streak to nine matches. To begin the week, he defeated Campbell's Dustin Werner, 7-6, 6-1 as Gardner-Webb opened Big South play with a 4-3 win over the Fighting Camels. Less than 48 hours, in a non-conference match against Kennesaw State, Scholl earned another two-set victory with a 6-4, 6-2 defeated of the Owls' Fermin Calvo Barcelo.
In doubles action, Scholl and partner Millen Hurrion went 2-0 in the No. 1 flight and allowed their opponents to win a combined three games in two matches. Against Campbell, the duo defeated Dustin Werner and Raphael Calzi, 6-2. On Sunday against Kennesaw State, Scholl and Hurrion cruised to a 6-1 win over the Owls' Brian Triana and Drew Lahey. The pair of victories improved the duo's record 8-1 overall with all matches coming in the top flight.
After yesterday's win against Limestone College, Scholl improved to 10-1 in singles, while he and Hurrion are win away from double-digit victories in doubles play.
The Runnin' Bulldogs are 6-5 overall and have won their last six matches after a difficult start. The team will return to action on Wednesday, March 27 when it hosts the Blue Hose of Presbyterian College. First serve of the Big South Conference match is set for 3 p.m.
