BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Brooke Perry and Autumn Owen batted in runs in the fourth inning, but Radford scored in five of the seven innings as Gardner-Webb fell to the Highlanders, 10-2, in its Big South Conference opener.
Gardner-Webb (17-10, 0-1 Big South) got off to a slow start, failing to have a baserunner through three innings. Meanwhile, the Highlanders scored three runs over the first three frames to take a 3-0 lead.
Radford (10-17, 2-2 BSC) plated three additional runs in the fourth, including two thanks to an RBI double by Maggie Rowe, and led 6-0 after the top of the fourth.
The Runnin' Bulldogs' bats briefly came alive during their half of the fourth inning as Andria Booth led off with a single to left field. Booth moved to second when Kaylee Wacaster got an infield hit after Radford attempted to let the ball roll foul, but it stayed in fair territory.
With two runners on and one in scoring position, Perry doubled, scoring Booth and moving Wacaster to third. Owen's sacrifice fly plated Wacaster, and the 'Dogs trailed, 6-2.
The Highlanders got out of the fourth as Kayla Huffman got a groundout, and RU scored its seventh run in the top of the fifth.
Weslyn Almond recorded Gardner-Webb's lone hit of the fifth inning – a single – and neither team managed any runs in the sixth.
Radford scored three additional runs in the top of the seventh to take a 10-2 lead. The Highlanders recorded two hits, both doubles, as they held an eight-run lead after the top of the frame.
Gardner-Webb could not muster a comeback in its half of the seventh, going down in order.
Radford's Kayla Huffman (4-9) earned the win. Huffman threw a complete game and allowed just two runs on four hits. She fanned seven and did not walk a batter. Perry (10-6) took the loss, giving up six runs in 3.2 innings. Freshman Reah Barger gave up four runs (two earned) in 3.1 innings of relief.
Four different Runnin' Bulldogs – Almond, Booth, Perry and K. Wacaster – recorded hits in the loss. Hannah Medlan had three hits for Radford, while Sofia Tapia batted in a team-high three runs.
The two teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow, Saturday, March 23. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. from Brinkley Stadium, and the games can be seen live on ESPN+.
