Gardner-Webb Softball Blanks Wright State, 7-0, Monday Afternoon

BOILING SPRINGS – Gardner-Webb plated two runs in the second, three in the fifth and two more in the sixth, and Brooke Perry was sharp in the circle to spark a 7-0 win over Wright State Monday afternoon.

The Runnin' Bulldogs (12-6) collected nine hits on the day and went up for good in the second frame.

Perry led off and was hit by a pitch, but was cut down on a fielder's choice one batter later. Jenna Wacaster came through with a big knock, roping a double into right field. Meredith Ferguson then stepped in and drove home the game's first run with an RBI groundout – then Wacaster sprinted home on a throwing error for a 2-0 lead.

The scoreboard was quiet until the fifth, when Ferguson led off and was plunked. Trinity Sterrett reached on an error and Andria Booth drove in a run with a groundout. Annamarie Warley delivered the big blow, hitting a line drive to center for a triple that drove in Sterrett for a 4-0 lead.

Kaylee Wacaster then singled in a run with a hit to left field for a 5-0 advantage.

Gardner-Webb padded its lead with two insurance runs in the sixth, getting an RBI single from Maddie Lewis and another RBI hit from Booth.

Perry (7-3) got the win, hurling a complete-game shutout with seven strikeouts. She allowed just four hits – all singles – and walked only one in a stellar effort.

Booth (2-for-4), Kaylee Wacaster (2-for-3) and Jenna Wacaster (2-for-3) led the offensive effort. Six different batters collected hits in the game.

Wright State's Olivia Otani (3-3) took the loss, allowing seven runs (three earned) on nine hits in her 6.0 innings of work.

Four different Wright State batters collected one single each in the game.

Gardner-Webb will catch a flight to the Lone Star State next, traveling to Lubbock, Texas for the 2019 Texas Tech Invitational from March 8-10. The event opens on Friday at 2:30 pm against Jacksonville State.
