Gardner-Webb Earns Third Straight Victory with 4-3 Win at Wofford on Thursday

SPARTANBURG, SC – After dropping the doubles point, the Gardner-Webb men's tennis team won four of the six singles matches to earn its third straight win of the year, 4-3, over the Wofford Terriers on Thursday afternoon.

Gardner-Webb is now 3-5 overall heading into Big South Conference play, while Wofford drops to 4-9 overall.

Wofford began the match with a pair of doubles victories in the No. 2 and No. 3 positions to clinch the point. In the No. 1 position, Gardner-Webb's Maximilian Scholl and Millen Hurrion, the 68th ranked doubles team in the country, was credited with 5-4 win in a shortened match.

After trailing following the conclusion of doubles play, the Runnin' Bulldogs saw the momentum swing in their favor in singles action. Gardner-Webb won four singles contests, including a pair in the latter half of the lineup.

"It was great to come back after losing the doubles point and see the bottom half of the lineup win the match for us," said head coach Mike Griffith. "Wofford is a great team and beating them at their place is huge, especially with the start of Big South play coming up on Saturday."

Gardner-Webb's Ross Gilbert won the first singles match of the afternoon. Gilbert cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 win over Lucas Cerbelli in the No. 4 flight.

The Runnin' Bulldogs took a 3-1 lead as Scholl and Hurrion were victorious in the top two flights. 80th-ranked Hurrion won in the No. 2 position, 6-3, 6-3, while Scholl, who has won seven consecutive singles matches, cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Julian Chousa.

Gardner-Webb's 3-1 lead did not last long. Wofford's Edu Viillar defeated Breno Plentz at No. 3, 7-5, 6-3, and Stefano Puga was defeated in the No. 6 flight, which allowed the Terriers to tie the match.

The outcome of the match came down to the No. 5 position, which featured a battle between Johan Fors and Brice Keim. The match went three sets and included a second-set tiebreaker.

Fors was ahead after one set thanks to a 6-3 victory, but Keim evened the match after a marathon second set ended in his favor, 7-6 (10). After dropping set two, Fors had no intention of being defeated and made quick work of Keim in the third set with a 6-2 win.

Fors' win gave the Runnin' Bulldogs their third victory of the year and first on the road.

The 'Dogs will return to action in less than 48 hours when Longwood comes to Boiling Springs for GWU's Big South Conference opener on Saturday, March 9. First serve is set for 11 a.m. The match is the first of five consecutive home contests for Gardner-Webb.
