Gardner-Webb Gets Dominant 6-0 Win Over Hampton In Final Road Contest of Regular Season

HAMPTON, Va. – Gardner-Webb won its second consecutive match with a 6-0 sweep of the Hampton Pirates on Thursday afternoon in its final road contest of the regular season.

"It's a long trip to Hampton, and we overcame adversity today to win," said head coach Mike Griffith. "Hampton played very well and made it a tough match for us. We are excited for one last regular season match on Saturday at home and also for our seniors. The guys know there is a lot riding on the match but are excited for to have a chance to clinch the regular season championship."

Gardner-Webb (11-7, 6-1 Big South) got off to a hot start with Breno Plentz and Johan Fors earning a dominant win at No. 2 doubles, 6-2, over Charles Hudson and Fernando Fernandes. The Runnin' Bulldogs clinched the point when Maximilian Scholl and Millen Hurrion won their 14th consecutive doubles match, 7-5, in the top flight.

With a 1-0 lead, Gardner-Webb did not allow Hampton (1-15, 0-8 Big South) to win a match in singles play. Fors, who is 6-4 overall in his past 10 matches kicked off singles play with a convincing win over Basil Post. Fors allowed Post to win just one combined game in the two sets.

Plentz, who has won eight of his past 10 singles contests, gave the Runnin' Bulldogs a 3-0 lead with a 6-2, 6-2 win, and Stefano Puga clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-4 defeat of Hudson in the No. 5 flight.

Hurrion (No. 2) and Scholl (No. 1) were the final two players off the court but were both victorious. Hurrion topped Luke Thompson, 6-1, 7-6 (4) to improve to 14-2 overall and 6-1 in the Big South Conference. Scholl took three sets to defeat Davy Van Geerke, 6-2, 2-6, 7-5, for his team and league-best 17th win of the season. The Stuttgart, Germany native is now on a 17-match winning streak and is a perfect 7-0 in conference play.

The Runnin' Bulldogs will look to clinch the Big South Conference regular season championship with a win over Longwood on Saturday, April 13. The match is set for 3 p.m., and head coach Mike Griffith will honor the team's two seniors – Scholl and Fors – prior to the match.
