SPARTANBURG, SC – Autumn Owen hit a solo home run in the top of the first inning, but Gardner-Webb could not maintain the early lead and fell to the USC Upstate Spartans, 6-1, in the series finale on Thursday night.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (24-21, 3-12 Big South) pulled ahead 1-0 when Owen, facing a full count, blasted her 12
th home run over the center field fence off Christina Biggerstaff.
Gardner-Webb's lead would not last beyond the first inning, as the Spartans tied the contest in their half of the inning when a wild pitch allowed Alyssa Oakes to score.
USC Upstate (34-10, 14-4 Big South sed a pair of singles and two errors by the Gardner-Webb defense to take a 3-1 lead in the top of the second inning.
Both teams were held scoreless in the third with the Runnin' Bulldogs going down in order, and
Laken Myers pitching around back-to-back singles to retire the Spartans.
USC Upstate extended its lead to four runs, 5-1, when Oakes hit a two-run shot with two outs. The Runnin' Bulldogs left
Annamarie Warley stranded after she singled with two outs in the top of the fifth, and the Spartans added their sixth and final run in the bottom of the inning.
Myers held the USCU scoreless over the last two innings and took advantage of a double play turned by
Weslyn Almond and
Lauren Huffman to get out of the sixth.
Gardner-Webb managed a one-out single from
Kaylee Wacaster in the seventh, but she was thrown out trying to extend her base hit into a double. Biggerstaff retired the final batter batter to record her 21
st win of the year. She threw a complete game and allowed only one run. Myers (5-6) took the loss giving up six runs (three earned) on seven hits in six innings of work.
Owen, K. Wacaster and Warley recorded hits for GWU, while Oakes (1-for-2, 2 RBI) and Helton (2-for-4, RBI) led USC Upstate.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will return to action on Saturday, April 13 for a three-game series with Presbyterian. A doubleheader is currently scheduled for 1 p.m. with senior day festivities honoring
Andria Booth,
Madi Lewis,
Callie Thornton,
Kaylee Wacaster and
Annamarie Warley set to take place before first pitch of the twinbill. Game three will take place on Sunday, April 14 at 2 p.m.
