Gardner-Webb Sweeps Final Women's Tennis Weekly Awards
April 14, 2019 | Women's Tennis
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb women's tennis program swept the Big South Conference weekly awards today with Mayumi Saguchi being named Player of the Week and Manon Delsol receiving Freshman of the Week accolades.
Saguchi (Maipu, Argentina / Universidad de la defense) earned her second weekly award. She was previously named Freshman of the Week on March 20. She had a stellar week with a perfect 2-0 singles record as Gardner-Webb earned a pair of team wins against Presbyterian and Longwood.
Against Presbyterian's Beth Taylor Saguchi won in three sets to clinch the upset victory over the Blue Hose. The Maipu, Argentina native fell in set one but forced a third with a 7-5 win in the second set.
In the winner-take-all third set, Saguchi forced Taylor to continually run the length of the baseline. By using a variety of shots and forcing Taylor to constantly be on the move, she took a 3-0 lead over Taylor, who retired, which effectively gave the Runnin' Bulldogs the 4-3 win.
Two days later against Longwod, Saguchi clinched another victory for Gardner-Webb to lock up the #3 seed in the Big South tournament for the Runnin' Bulldogs. She needed just two sets to defeat Emma Nurgazievea, 6-2, 7-5. Saguchi finished the 10-5 overall and an impressive 6-3 in Big South Conference action as a freshman.
Delsol (Mancault, France / Lycee St. Capris Agen) ended the year a perfect 3-0 between singles and doubles action. In a Wednesday match against Presbyterian, she teammed with Valentine Limauge, and they won 7-5 over Samatha Calais and Jessica Leeman.
In singles, Delsol outscored her opponents, 24-6, in two matches. She defeated PC's Katie Thompson, 6-2, 6-2. On Saturday, she shutout the Longwood Lancers' Anika Tylek, 6-0, in the opening set, and quickly won the final set, 6-2.
Delsol finished her campaign 7-8 overall (5-3 Big South) in singles and on a three-match winning streak, which she will carry into the Big South conference tournament.
The #3 seed Runnin' Bulldogs will battle #6 Radford in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, April 17 at 3 p.m. The tournament will be held on the campus of Radford University.
