BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Jenna Wacaster belted a pair of home runs to give Gardner-Webb the series win over the Presbyterian College Blue Hose, 12-4, on Sunday.
Gardner-Webb (26-22, 5-13 Big South) led one stranded in its half of the first after
Brooke Perry forced Presbyterian to strand a pair of runners after giving up back-to-back walks, but the 'Dogs took a 4-0 lead in the second.
In the bottom of the second,
Kaylee Wacaster scored Gardner-Webb's first run, coming home from second when a fielding error attempting to get her sister Jenna out sailed over the head of Presbyterian's Lindsay Harris.
With the bases loaded,
Madi Lewis' sacrifice fly scored
Lily Pressley, and J. Wacaster made it a 3-0 ball game when she came home on a wild pitch.
Still in the second,
Lauren Huffman and
Andria Booth both drew walks, which loaded the bases. With the bases full,
Weslyn Almond walked, allowing
Annamarie Warley to score. At the end of two, Gardner-Webb led, 4-0.
In the bottom of the third, J. Wacaster hit a two-run shot, sending the first pitch she saw over the fence in left field to give the 'Dogs a 6-0 advantage over the Blue Hose. With one out, Lewis singled, but she was left stranded to end the inning.
Presbyterian (11-34-2, 1-17 Big South) got on the board when Courtney White began the top of the fourth with a home run over the left field fence, but Gardner-Webb answered with three runs in its half of the frame.
Almond and
Autumn Owen singled to start the Runnin' Bulldogs half of the fourth, and with two outs J. Wacaster blasted her second home run of the contest, this one a three-run shot to left center field.
Presbyterian responded with a three-run in the top of the fifth to cut Gardner-Webb's lead to 9-4, and the 'Dogs were unable to score in the bottom of the frame.
Perry gave up just a one-out single in the sixth, and Gardner-Webb plated three runs to end the game after six. With two on, Warley's single to left field brought Perry home. After a pitching change,
Madi Lewis walked, loading the bases. Facing a full count, Huffman singled to left field with Warley and J. Wacaster scoring to give the Runnin' Bulldogs the 12-4 win.
Perry (16-10) threw a complete game and gave up four runs on eight hits. She fanned six batters and walked a pair. The Blue Hose's Taylor Ward (4-14) lasted just 1.1 innings in the circle and took the loss. She allowed four runs (three earned) and walked four.
J. Wacaster went 2-for-3 at the plate with both hits going over the fence. Her two home runs accounted for five of Gardner-Webb's 10 runs batted in.
The 'Dogs will not play a mid-week series next week but will head to Charleston Southern for a three-game series starting on Friday, April 19. Friday's twinbill will start at 3 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN+. Saturday's single game will begin at 2 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN3.
