Men's Golf Shines In Final Regular Season Tune Up At Southern Intercollegiate

ATHENS, Ga. – Gardner-Webb men's golf fared well in its final tune-up for the 2019 Big South Championship, finishing fourth against a strong field at the 2019 Southern Intercollegiate on Monday afternoon.
The Runnin' Bulldogs fought through windy conditions and fast greens through the 36-hole, one-day event, carding a team score of 292 in the second round to move up to fourth place. Head coach Tee Burton's bunch finished just seven strokes behind host Georgia and nipped Kennesaw State by one shot.
South Carolina shot a 278 over the final 18 holes to with the tournament by 20 strokes.
Junior Steffen Smith paced Gardner-Webb individually, finishing in a tie for seventh after rounds of 72 and 71. Jake Scruggs (73-73-146) finished in a tie for 12th, while Andy Yang (78-73-151) trimmed five strokes off of his first round score to move into the top-40.
Zack Byers (77-76-153) finished tied for 40th position and Patrick Wu (79-75-154) finished tied for 47th.
Gardner-Webb will have little time to rest, as it heads to Ninety Six, S.C., on Wednesday morning for the practice round and then first round action later that day at the 2019 Big South Championship. The tournament is being played as usual on the Patriot Course at Grand Harbor.
